Natural Remedies for Postpartum Recovery {Dear Best Friend...}

Congratulations on your baby! Giving birth is exhausting, hard work. It is amazing what a woman's body can do and then you have to pick up and hit the ground running in a very short recovery period - especially if you have other children to care for or not a lot of outside help.

Throw in sleep deprivation and an already taxed immune system and all other parts of you are running on empty. After recovering from two births, I cannot state enough that it is so immensely important for you to take care of yourself well after having a baby!

Your body needs nourishment, your body needs healing, your body needs rest. If you don't listen to your body, you're setting yourself up for more health issues down the road and possibly baby blues or PPD (postpartum depression). Not to mention that your body needs restoration and replenishing nutritional stores before having another baby down the road.

This list is by no means exhaustive, but I tried my best to do a scavenger hunt for anything I could find that helped moms recover - in addition to things that have proven to work well for myself. If you know something missing from this list, please leave a comment! Other moms may find it very helpful!

Arnica

Arnica taken internally is wonderful for postpartum pain management! I didn't even know about it until giving birth for the second time, but it was very helpful for recovering, especially since the afterbirth pains with the second baby are worse and I don't like to take any conventional pain medications. I have some as part of the homeopathic kit, but you can also buy it separately and it's available in most health food stores and Amazon.

Probiotics

Your immune system thrives on good bacteria and about 80% of your immune system is based in the gut! So it's only logical that if antibiotics were administered to baby and you during birth, it weakens the immune system and kills good bacteria along with the bad. It's so important to take these, even if you didn't get any antibiotics. That, along with some yogurt every day, will help your digestion and immune system. I usually buy them at Swanson Vitamins (you get $5 coupon if you click), they are also available here.

Red Raspberry Leaf Tea

Perfect to take throughout pregnancy and postpartum, red raspberry leaf tea has a myriad of benefits. It strengthens the uterus and it is high in vitamin C. It is even available in most stores, or you can buy some here.
*always consult with qualified herbalist, midwife, or doctor before taking any herbs during pregnancy.

Nettle

Another beneficial herbal tea that isn't just for postpartum healing, it has many benefits for any person. It is said to provide energy, and has lots of trace minerals and vitamins. It's often an ingredients in postpartum herbal teas along with red raspberry leaf tea. It is available at health food stores and online.

Dandelion

This herb is great as a tea and aids with constipation among other benefits. There is really a lot more it's said to do, especially considering it can even work for cancer patients.

Fennel

Fennel tea is great for digestion and milk production. It may also help with your baby's digestion, gas, and tummy aches. It is used in postpartum tea and milk production boosting teas as well. You may find it in some stores or you can purchase it online

Cod Liver Oil

Beneficial fats, vitamins, and minerals in cod liver oil are a power house of goodness for baby and you. While this is something to be taking through pregnancy and even before conception, it's never too late to start. The benefits of cod liver oil are amazing! Just beware of cheap fish oil sold at most stores, it's an inferior product often filled with synthetic vitamins because they are destroyed with the processing of the fish oil to make the supplement. Your best bet is Green Pastures Fermented Cod Liver Oil, which is expensive. The next best thing is the Swanson Double Strength Cod Liver Oil.

Vitamin D

This vitamin is essential for well-being in so many aspects. For postpartum healing it's crucial for mental health, pain management, immune system, and so much more. While it is best to get vitamin D with moderate sun exposure, you may also want to try a supplement such as this. Cod liver oil does contain vitamin D, but it's not a very large dose. I know from personal experience that when I feel sickness coming on, a large dose of 4,000 to 6,000 IUs of vitamin D knocks it right out and I feel good as new.

Magnesium

During pregnancy magnesium can do wonders for restless legs. For postpartum purposes it can help with postpartum depression, headaches, and overall well being in stressful times. Although it is unlikely you would have trouble falling asleep being so exhausted, it does help with insomnia if needed. I actually know this from personal experience. I take some Natural Calm when I have trouble falling asleep, which is rare. I'm also convinced it helped with my healing following my fall down the stairs.

Essential Oils

I haven't tried essential oils for postpartum issues, but I know other moms have and there are many ways to use them. I am not very knowledgeable on the subject, but Natural Living Mama has a good summary of essential oils for postpartum healing to help with abdominal pain, bleeding, breastfeeding, inflammation, UTIs, and baby blues. There is a large selection of essential oils on Amazon and I know many moms sell doTERRA products.

Sore Muscle Rub

I don't know about you, but my body felt sore all over after giving birth, especially the land birth with Baby E (Baby T was a lot more forgiving with a water birth). To soothe sore muscles you can use some natural muscle rub like this one on your shoulders, thighs, and back. Of course this may help but if you want more than a quick fix, try a reputable chiropractor.

Earth Mama Nipple Butter

This natural lanolin-free nipple cream is very soothing and healing for your nursing breasts. Clinically tested and hospital recommended, it is great for dry, cracked skin. It's also safe for baby, there is no need to wash it off before nursing. Available at Earth Mama Angel Baby.

Breast Milk

The healing properties of breast milk are amazing and often it is all that's needed to soothe nipples adjusting to nursing a baby. Just dab some on and around the nipple before and after nursing the baby.

Coconut Oil

Beneficial internally but especially helpful for sore nipples during your first weeks of nursing baby. Just put a little on your nipple before and after a feeding (if it's solid at room temperature, just hold a little piece between your fingers to melt it). Coconut oil is available in most stores today (and online), if possible buy organic and make sure there aren't any added ingredients.

Earth Mama Bottom Balm

If I ever give birth again, I am getting some of this balm because the reviews from other moms are pretty amazing, it really works! It doesn't contain any toxins or parabens and it is great for prenatal and postpartum hemorrhoids, episiotomy, and perineal bruising.

Heating Pads

A heating pad can be very helpful with postpartum cramping, which gets especially bad with second and subsequent births. You could improvise by running a towel under hot water and placing that on the belly, or you could buy one at any store, I know Target sells some. I prefer the ones with clay, rice, or buckwheat as the filling.

Prunes

Going to the bathroom regularly can be quite the ordeal after giving birth! It's something you can't really talk to people about and even with a midwife or doctor you may be hesitant to bring it up. One of the most simple and natural ways to help you out is to eat a few prunes. It will affect your baby's stool as well, so be very careful with how much you consume. You may just start with one or two and see if it helps you and how it affects the baby. Of course they are available in any store, or you can buy some online. If it's any consolation, it does get better and easier with time!

Nutrient Dense Meals

Your baby eats what you eat, you simply must invest in vitamin rich, nutrient dense foods. Even if you keep it really simple and just avoid pre-packaged meals that are full of additives and unpronounceable ingredients that do not belong in your body and that of your baby. It's really important to eat plenty of 'good fat' foods to nourish your baby's growth - like avocados, grass fed butter, pastured eggs, and coconut oil. Fat is good for you, it's the fake, processed, GMO oils that are devastating to health (canola, corn, soy, 'vegetable' oil). For some nourishing recipes with healthy ingredients, check out Wellness Mama. We have a few recipes too, but our repertoire is tiny so far.

Outdoors

Finally, simply being outdoors is good both for you and baby! Indoor air is a lot more polluted than outdoor air. While you should open the windows as much as possible and let fresh air in, a stroll with your baby in a stroller or baby carrier will do wonders for your mood and health. While going to crowded public places with a newborn isn't advisable, especially in the winter months, it is completely safe to take the baby outdoors - granted the weather is appropriate and the baby is dressed accordingly.

What are your tips for natural postpartum healing?

Are Vaccines Safe? {Dear Best Friend...}

I'll be honest, I didn't want to touch this subject with a ten foot pole. But among my friends in real life and online it is one of the most asked questions: "How do you decide whether to vaccinate or not? How do you know vaccines are safe?" Since three of my lovely bridesmaid from 6 years ago are all pregnant, I feel compelled to share this information and resources with them so that they can make their own decision. I'm also going to finally have a page to point readers to when they ask this question again [and again, and again...]

I am not here to tell anyone what to do, I am not a doctor, I have no medical training, it's your child and your decision. Please consult with a medical professional that you trust to make such decisions. This post is merely meant as a resource for parents that care enough to research first without blindly doing something because 'everyone does it' or 'experts' endorse it as safe - just as doctors endorsed  x-rays for pregnant women and smoking back in the day. While parents who decide not to vaccinate are usually college-educated people with above-average salaries, I believe the tide is also shifting to include all kinds of parents from a variety of income brackets to question the science behind vaccines and the claims from the manufacturers themselves. More and more people know someone who has been vaccine injured, so it is only logical to question the safety of vaccines.

Also, more parents now actually take the time to read the manufacturer's inserts, you know, just to see what's injected into their kids. Most are surprised at what they read.

Parents have every reason to question vaccines because the government branches that are supposed to lookout for the health of the people, the CDC (Centers for Disease Control) and the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) are simply put - 'in bed with' the billion dollar vaccine industry.

So are vaccines safe? All I can do to answer that question is provide you with some information. There is plenty of information on the alleged benefits of vaccines on government and medical establishment websites. Let's reiterate that, government and medical establishment websites. As in, the same government that is financially invested in the success of vaccines and is closely tied to vaccine manufacturers to the point that they are nearly one and the same. Former employees of vaccine manufacturers work for CDC and the FDA, and vice versa. The very people that decide which vaccine will be injected into children all over the nation have huge conflict of interest and ties to vaccine manufacturers (more about that here and here).

What about unbiased information? Safety studies that are not conducted by the vaccine manufacturers themselves? Studies that pose no conflict of interest? There aren't many, because it's not in their financial interest.

General Safety

To start with, one of the main reasons vaccine safety can and should be questioned is that there are no long term independent studies on vaccine side effects or safety. None. Nada. Zilch. If you can point me to one, please do. But all I've found is doctors' statements on the absence of such studies and nothing on the CDC website. Most studies are both sponsored by the manufacturers and are short term, neither of which has the interest of your child in mind.

Moreover, giving the same exact vaccine dose to every child regardless of their weight, medical history, genetic predisposition, and other individual considerations can hardly be considered safe or logical. Everyone knows that vaccines have side effects, it's no secret. It is estimated that only about 10% of these are reported to the VAERS database. It is up to you to decide if you are willing to risk serious potential side effects for the 'greater good' or if you are willing to risk the chance of an infectious disease. Either way there are risks.

The following graph shows the correlation of the mortality for children under age five and the number of vaccines on each country's recommendation list. This is perhaps the most compelling evidence to question the safety of vaccines and the sheer number of recommended doses.

Original course: http://bit.ly/11OghcO

Effectiveness and Science

It is also common knowledge that vaccines are not 100% effective. While it isn't always possible to pinpoint the effectiveness percentage, it varies anywhere from 25% to 95%. (a, b, c, d, e, f, g) In the case of Gardasil, an HPV vaccine mainly targeted at girls, the lead vaccine developer actually admitted Gardasil and Cervarix do not work, are dangerous, and haven't been adequately tested.

"Dr. Harper explained in her presentation that the cervical cancer risk in the U.S. is already extremely low, and that vaccinations are unlikely to have any effect upon the rate of cervical cancer in the United States.  In fact, 70% of all H.P.V. infections resolve themselves without treatment in a year, and the number rises to well over 90% in two years.  Harper also mentioned the safety angle.  All trials of the vaccines were done on children aged 15 and above, despite them currently being marketed for 9-year-olds.
So far, 15,037 girls have reported adverse side effects from Gardasil alone to the Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System (V.A.E.R.S.), and this number only reflects parents who underwent the hurdles required for reporting adverse reactions.  At the time of writing, 44 girls are officially known to have died from these vaccines.  The reported side effects include Guillian Barré Syndrome (paralysis lasting for years, or permanently — sometimes eventually causing suffocation), lupus, seizures, blood clots, and brain inflammation.  Parents are usually not made aware of these risks."(h)

Vaccines were developed before many advances in modern medicine and current eye-opening research about the complexities of the human body, yet they still function on basic assumption from nearly a century ago.
"The theory behind vaccines is that they mimic infection by spurring B cells, one of the two major types of white blood cells in the immune system, to produce antibodies as part of the adaptive immune system. It is widely believed that these vaccine-induced antibodies, which are part of the more specific adaptive immune system, teach the immune system how to directly respond to an infection before the body becomes exposed to it.
But the new research highlights the fact that innate immunity plays a significant role in fighting infections, and is perhaps more important than adaptive immunity at preventing or fighting infections. In tests, adaptive immune system antibodies were shown unable to fight infection by themselves, which in essence debunks the theory that vaccine-induced antibodies serve any legitimate function in preventing or fighting off infection." 1, 2

Aluminum as Adjuvant

Most vaccines contain aluminum as an adjuvant to increase immune system response. It has never been adequately studied for safety and it's affects on the brain of young children have safety concerns.
"Aluminum is an experimentally demonstrated neurotoxin and the most commonly used vaccine adjuvant. Despite almost 90 years of widespread use of aluminum adjuvants, medical science's understanding about their mechanisms of action is still remarkably poor. There is also a concerning scarcity of data on toxicology and pharmacokinetics of these compounds. In spite of this, the notion that aluminum in vaccines is safe appears to be widely accepted. Experimental research, however, clearly shows that aluminum adjuvants have a potential to induce serious immunological disorders in humans. In particular, aluminum in adjuvant form carries a risk for autoimmunity, long-term brain inflammation and associated neurological complications and may thus have profound and widespread adverse health consequences. In our opinion, the possibility that vaccine benefits may have been overrated and the risk of potential adverse effects underestimated, has not been rigorously evaluated in the medical and scientific community." Journal of Current Medicinal Chemistry

Vaccines and SIDS

For a mother, waking up to find your baby blue and not breathing is probably the worst nightmare. The definitive cause of SIDS is not known but there are many theories. Nobody can say for sure if toxins in mattresses or vaccines are partly to blame. Babies are surrounded by environmental toxins, including vaccines, and there is really no way to pin-point just one cause.

Original course: http://bit.ly/11OghcO

"JAPAN In 1975, about 37 Crib Sudden Deaths were linked to vaccination in Japan. Doctors in one prefecture boycotted vaccinations, and refused to vaccinate. The Japanese government paid attention and stopped vaccinating children below the age of two years. When immunization was delayed until a child was 24 months of age, Sudden Infant Death cases and claims for vaccine related deaths disappeared. Japan zoomed from a high 17th place in infant mortality rate to the lowest infant mortality rate in the world when they stopped vaccinating. Japan didn't vaccinate any children below the age of two years between 1975 and 1988, for thirteen years. But then in 1988, Japanese parents were given the choice to start vaccinating anywhere between three months and 48 months. The Ministry study group studied 2,720 SIDS cases occurring between 1980 and 1992 and they established that their very low SIDS rate quadrupled." - Scheibner, Viera, Ph.D.

Newborn Hepatitis B Vaccine

The first vaccine all newborns receive at birth in the United States is the Hepatitis B vaccine.
"The primary reason that the CDC recommended hepatitis B vaccination for all newborns in the United States in 1991 is because public health officials and doctors could not persuade adults in high risk groups (primarily IV drug abusers and persons with multiple sexual partners) to get the vaccine."
"As of March 2012, there was a total of 66,654 hepatitis B vaccine-related  adverse events reported to the federal Vaccine Adverse Events Reporting System (VAERS), including reports of headache, irritability, extreme fatigue, brain inflammation, convulsions, rheumatoid arthritis, optic neuritis, multiple sclerosis, lupus, Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) and neuropathy. There have been more than 1500 hepatitis B vaccine-related deaths reported, including deaths classified as sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS)." Note: only about 10% of actual incidences are reported
The Hepatitis B vaccine is perhaps the most controversial of all. Contrary to public belief, it isn't necessarily a deadly disease as it is portrayed.
"Infants who contract hepatitis B, either from their infected mother or infected blood transfusions, are at highest risk for chronic infection. But for the majority of healthy teenagers and adults, who come down with hepatitis B infection, symptoms include nausea, vomiting, low grade fever, pain and swelling in the joints, headache, and cough for two weeks before the onset of jaundice and enlargement/tenderness of the liver that lasts for three to four weeks. Fatigue can last up to a year but "most patients do not require hospital care" and "95 percent of patients have a favorable course and recover completely" with the case fatality ratio being "very low (approximately 0.1 percent)" according to Harrison's Principles of Medicine (11th Edition).
Those who recover completely from hepatitis B infection acquire life-long immunity. One medical textbook (Robbins Pathologic Textbook of Disease) points out that among those who do not recover completely from hepatitis B infection, fewer than 5 percent become chronic carriers of the virus, with just one quarter of these in danger of developing life threatening disease later in life. " Source

Weakened Immune System

It's a known fact that just like a virus, vaccines weaken the immune system. The problem is that in addition to a virus, vaccines contain many toxic ingredients that further weaken the immune system - something absent in a real virus scenario.

Every vaccine insert will warn that it shouldn't be injected into a person that is currently ill or has a compromised immune system. Manufacturers know this, doctors know this, yet often they fail to follow these guidelines and children needlessly suffer as a result. Assaulting an immune system that's already working hard to fight whatever it is the body is dealing with, can end up like this.

"All vaccines are immune suppressing, meaning they affect immune function for a period of time and can make some people more susceptible to coming down with a viral or bacterial infection.. The chemicals, adjuvants, lab altered viruses and bacteria and foreign DNA/RNA from animal and human cell substrates in the vaccines may compromise immune system function and depress immunity -- that is the trade-off you are risking.
The conventional belief is that it is acceptable to exchange this small overall immune suppression for immunity to one infectious disease. However, remember that this means you're trading a total immune system suppression, which is your main defense against all known disease -- including millions of pathogens -- for a temporary immunity against just one disease.
This may help explain why people who get a flu shot may actually be more likely to acquire an infection from another virus, as was shown to be the case with H1N1 (swine flu)." - Dr. Mercola

Chronic Diseases

While we are seeing a decrease in infectious diseases and huge advances in treating them to minimize lethal outcomes, as a nation we are sicker than ever before. Children are chronically ill. Autoimmune diseases are on the rise. Cancer, asthma, allergies, ADHD, autism, rheumatoid arthritis (even in children), diabetes... How do we know vaccines are not the cause of the rise of autoimmune diseases?

Original course: http://bit.ly/11OghcO

"I believe that the exposure to yeast, egg, animal, or human proteins in the context of immunogenic (antibody producing) stimuli has the potential to result in sensitization to these proteins or even to break human immunologic tolerance to “self.” The latter is especially relevant to infants, since their immune system is only starting to make the distinction between “self” and “foreign.” Setting this distinction the wrong way from the start, in my view, is likely to pave the road to allergic or autoimmune manifestations." - Research Immunologist Tetyana Obukhanych PhD

VAERS (Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System) Database

If you are not aware, the government does have a way to track adverse reactions to vaccines with the VAERS Database (the government website is near impossible to search, this is an easier MedAlerts database search engine).
"Since 1990, between 12,000 and 14,000 reports of hospitalizations, injuries and deaths following vaccination are made to the federal Vaccine Adverse Event Reporting System, or VAERS, annually, but it is estimated that only between 1 and 10 percent of all doctors make reports to VAERS. Therefore, the number of vaccine-related health problems occurring in the United States every year may be more than 1 million." - Barbara Loe Fisher (mother to child who died follow DPT shot)
Vaccine Injury Compensation awards $250,000 for the death of an individual following a vaccine or more to cover lifelong medical bills for those injured/brain-damaged. Over the years about $1.5 billion dollars has been paid out to vaccine injured families. But compensation is tough to get and parents have to fight the system for years.

A Call for Increased Safety

Since vaccine manufacturers take no responsibility for their products and are protected by our government, it is your responsibility to make the decision for your child. You are liable for side effects, even if deadly, and you are liable if your child contracts an infections disease. The difference is that the latter is out of your control and the former is not.

Something tells me that parents would be a lot more open to vaccinations if the ingredients were not so questionable. Is it impossible to produce vaccines without aborted fetal cells, formaldehyde, aluminum, Polysorbate 80 (producing infertility in animals), thimerosal, etc.? At such a massive scale, maybe not. It may be just my opinion, but it seems all the side effects of vaccines are more so from the toxic ingredients - not so much from the viruses they contain (although that's up for debate).

The questions parents have about vaccines are all legitimate and I wish our government, doctors, and scientists would actually listen to these questions. When a mother witnesses her perfectly healthy baby wither and die within hours, days, or short weeks post vaccination - nobody dare tell her it was a 'coincidence'. She has every reason to conclude the vaccinations caused it. We cannot ignore these mothers just as much as the mothers whose children die from infections diseases that vaccines can possibly prevent.

When will we start treating children as individuals and not a herd? How can we create a simple, inexpensive test to determine if a child has a genetic predisposition to a serious adverse reaction before making an injection? When will doctors stop vaccinating children who come to the office sick, resulting in more serious adverse reactions? When will pediatricians stop the name calling, harassing, and downright violence against parents who question vaccines? When will the massive conflicts of interest between the pharmaceutical companies and those who make vaccine schedule decisions be resolved? When will long-term independent vaccine safety studies be conducted?

Decisions, Decisions

With the information available, it's up to you to decide, I know it is not easy. While I have a very strong opinion on the subject, I shared as little of it as possible as I don't want my opinion influencing yours.

Vaccines do not have to be all or nothing. We are all well aware that the number of recommended vaccines has skyrocketed and that itself is reason to worry. I suggest approaching each vaccine individually to first decide whether you need it for your child, then possibly find a single-dose vaccine manufacturer of that particular one. In case of a serious reaction (other than the usual redness, fever, etc.) you will know exactly what caused it. Remember that you can always decide to vaccinate, but you cannot un-inject your baby once you go through with it.

This post is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to vaccines, not even. You will never be able to find, read, and analyze all the information. Neither can a doctor. That is something you need to make peace with. If you are religious and/or believe in God at all, I also suggest praying for guidance, we may not know all but He certainly does.

5 Foods That May Make a Breastfed Baby Fussy {Dear Best Friend...}

Breastfeeding is quite a learning curve for a first time mom. At least for me it was. I can't say it was all blue skies. I can say it was absolutely worth sticking with it through some hurdles. I learned the hard way that breastfed newborns do have a hard time digesting milk when the mother eats certain things. Not all babies do, but I would think most do. Often times moms simply do not connect the dots between a fussy, colicky, or too-much-spit-up baby and what they've had for the last meal.

There are a lot of terms used in reference to a fussy infant. Colicky, high needs, gassy, etc. I am by no means an expert and I am not a doctor, but even if I was - I can't tell you "Your baby is colicky because ____." Every baby is different, every mother is different. But here are the good news: they outgrow it! Before you know it, those evenings filled with inconsolable infant cries and parents wondering "I don't know what's bothering her!?" - will be over. Of course that will be replaced by other worries, but I digress.

Here are five common possible causes of infant fussiness. How would you know if any are in fact causing issues? You can eliminate them all and then reintroduce into your diet one at a time every couple of days or you can keep eating them all and only eliminate one at a time to see if it would help the symptoms at all.

Dairy

Why? Some babies to not digest cow's milk protein in your breast milk very well. This is completely different from lactose intolerance and is usually outgrown. Simply put, it is due to an immature gut that with growth will eventually tolerate milk protein. It's not particularly common and it is hard to diagnose, but if you are breastfeeding and your child has the symptoms listed below, try eliminating dairy to see if it does the trick. It will save you thousands in medical bills, unlike our story...

Our experience: At two weeks old with our first baby (4 years ago), after two days of inconsolable crying, projectile vomiting, and blood specks in her stool, we went to the ER. When they told us about intestinal blockage and surgery we drove to Boston Children's Hospital for a second opinion and it's a good thing we did! Otherwise she would have ended up with a completely unnecessary surgery. Lots of worry, prayer, and tests, three days later - they told us it's just a milk protein intolerance. We were so thankful that the fix was as easy as eliminating dairy from my diet (which, actually wasn't easy at all - but I would take that any day over surgery on a two week old baby!). I pumped and dumped for 5 days while she was on Similac Alimentum (which she hated) and started to nurse again. I was just filled with gratitude that all the symptoms went away and we could continue nursing, she was such a happy baby! This meant zero dairy for me, not even as an ingredient in a packaged food. This was a blessing in disguise as we underwent a total overhaul of our diet and started eating healthier (and my own skin became more clear). After one year we started slowly reintroducing dairy into our diet in the form of cheese and yogurt, she handled it fine. We never went back to drinking homogenized, pasteurized milk though - I myself have trouble digesting it.

Caffeine

Why? Some babies, especially infants, are sensitive to caffeine in the breastfeeding mother's diet. Some signs that a baby is sensitive to it may be an active, alert, wide-eyed baby who may be fuzzy and unable to sleep for very long. Caffeine in tea, coffee, chocolate, soda, and many processed foods may have this effect on baby. Here is a helpful chart at Kelly Mom on how much caffeine is in certain products. This doesn't mean you need to give up all caffeine! You may want to limit yourself to one cup of black or green tea or not-too-strong coffee per day (preferably in the morning) while your baby is an infant and your are breastfeeding.

Our experience: Through college I was a coffee addict, couldn't stay awake without it. My senior year I decided I had enough and hated how I felt without a cup of coffee, so I quit! I still drank black tea, but it didn't nearly have the same effect on me as coffee. Three years later I had my first baby and I noticed right away that she was different when I had my black tea. So I switched to herbal teas and have never looked back! Now, even though I could technically have coffee and black tea, I don't even want to. No desire whatsoever. My body just feels better without caffeine, I may be overly sensitive to it. Uhm, but I do love me some dark chocolate every now and then. Okay, I admit a little too often.

Greens

Why? While greens are absolutely needed and healthy to consume through pregnancy, you may find that they make your infant gassy and colicky. Vegetables such as brussels sprouts, broccoli  asparagus, green beans, and spinach can make baby very uncomfortable.

Our experience: I know moms who kept on eating greens when their babies were born and they were fine. Mine were absolutely not. Every.single.time I ate any green vegetables I would be up all night with an infant! Naturally it was easier to just avoid that. Even when breastfeeding my one year old, consuming any spinach would make him so gassy and fussy - it made everyone miserable. Not all greens caused problems for my babies, I still enjoyed making salads with Romaine lettuce, green onions

Citruses

Why? Often citruses may give the baby a rash, it is very acidic and has high amounts of vitamin C. It make make the baby gassy or fussy in addition to a rash.

Our experience: Both of my breastfed babies didn't tolerate citrus very well and would break out with a rash if I had a glass of orange juice or several clementines. In our experience thought at about the 1 year mark I was able to consume moderate amounts of citrus fruits without any more adverse effects. With infants though, it was crucial to avoid it, it made the baby very uncomfortable.

Wheat/Gluten

Why? Modern wheat today is nothing like the original wheat our ancestors consumed. There are several key difference between modern and 'ancient' wheat. While most babies would be fine with gluten in the mother's diet, there are instances of the autoimmune celiac disease when the baby is truly not able to tolerate any gluten. Just read Samuel's story, it's very real and important to diagnose.

"Undiagnosed Celiac Disease can lead to type 1 Diabetes, lymphomas and other cancers, other autoimmune diseases, and even death."
"That was Samuel. Starving even though he was eating... And we were told he was sick because he was number seven in a big family. Let me repeat that. I was constantly told that the reason he was sick, constipated, bleeding, not staying awake, and more because he was in a big family and exposed to more germs. He was sick for nine months prior to diagnosis."

Our experience: I do not have celiac disease and nobody in our family does. I am however gluten sensitive and sometimes I wonder if it is the reason I haven't been able to ever gain any substantial weight. It's as if what I am eating doesn't assimilate in my body at all. My babies do not seem to be sensitive, although I have no concrete conclusions. Their teeth seem to be doing much better without grains, so we only consume them on occasion and we try to stick with sprouted wheat or spelt when we do. It's just something I thought I would put here because it is a possibility and celiac disease is something most people don't always connect with a child who isn't thriving, is sickly, constipated, and generally weak.

What did your breastfed babies have trouble digesting, if anything?

5 Tips for a Peaceful Birth Experience {Dear Best Friend...}

Faith

Birth is a very spiritual experience, at least for me it was. I can attest to the fact that my faith has helped me through it. I am also certain that if it wasn't for my faith I would have fallen into PPD the months following welcoming our first baby. It was tough, motherhood is. Especially those first months when everything is so new and unknown. Praying through labor and birth was a tremendous help. No matter what you believe, it helps to understand the spiritual transformation that happens as you enter into motherhood. It's okay to let this experience change you, wash over you, make you an even better you. It's okay to surrender to this physical pain that many mothers before you have endured. You'll dive in and dive out never quite being the same.

Support

My spouse. I can honestly say I wouldn't be able to give birth without him. Especially the first time around, he was my rock and such a huge support physically, mentally, and spiritually. You need to have a person there with you that's on the same page. A person you connect well with, someone who will not create any tension. For the second birth I enjoyed tremendously having my spouse there to support me mentally and spiritually, thankfully he could physically relax this time and the water took care of supporting me physically for Baby T's water birth!

Make sure you also have a care provider you feel comfortable with. There is nothing worse than butting heads on differing views with a doctor as you're giving birth. Just like a wedding dress, you'll know when you find 'the one', trust your instincts. Don't just stop at OBs, look into midwives as well if you have a low-risk pregnancy and hope for a natural birth.

You may also consider hiring a doula for support, especially if your spouse cannot be present for one reason or another. A doula provides emotional and physical support during birth, she is an advocate for your wishes and rights. If you cannot afford a doula, you may want to try looking for one that is in training and needs a certain amount of births to attend for experience at a discounted rate or even free of charge. I've found that doulas are often wonderful people who are really committed to mothers and babies in very deep ways. Here is a helpful website for locating a doula, DoulaMatch. I find that a doula is most beneficial in a hospital birth where unnecessary interventions are most likely to occur.

Birth Preferences

Birth plans have the potential to get thrown out the window, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't have one. Communication is important, and those attending to you need to know your wishes and preferences - especially when you are in labor and are not in your right mind or can't speak for yourself. What do you want in a birth? You can specify everything from dim lights to epidural or not, when the cord is cut, your preferences on episiotomy, what would you want to happen in the event of an emergency c-section, newborn procedures you would like to opt out of, etc. Earth Mama Angel Baby has a pretty good free birth plan builder that I used as a starting point for mine.

I had a birth plan with both births. In the hospital it was super important, we printed many copies so every nurse at each shift was aware of it. There was perhaps only one thing that didn't go according to the birth plan and that's delayed cord clamping, which was hard to do with the umbilical cord wrapped around our newborn's neck twice. I know that if it wasn't for the birth plan, a lot of other things that were important to us would get thrown out the window. Thankfully the staff, for the most part, would always refer to our birth plan. With the second baby in a birth center, everything was just so much more peaceful and natural, I didn't really need one. The wonderful midwives were pretty aware of the reasons I was there, and not in a hospital.

Your Music

Music is amazing! It becomes ingrained in our memories and we associate certain music with particular moments in our lives. I still get teary listening to In Your Arms of Love by Kutless, since I walked down the aisle to that song. Music is such a huge part of my life, I had to have it with me when I gave birth! With both of my babies' births we brought our own music, I really enjoyed instrumental guitar. It's relaxing, it helps me focus, and just sets the mood for everyone involved. It makes it personal, tailor your playlist to what makes you happy and uplifts your spirit, whatever makes you feel stronger.

Your Nourishment

Even if you are planning a hospital birth where technically you don't need to worry about food, you should still bring some foods you enjoy, even if you only bring snacks. I never liked hospital food. It's sort of like restaurant food, you never really know what's in it (GMOs and pesticides are highly likely). With our first baby born in a hospital I wished I brought at least some of my own food. With our second we had a small birth center birth, so I had no choice but to bring my own. I loved having my own delicious sandwiches with us, packed with grass-fed butter and cheese, chicken, and organic veggies. After giving birth and feeling like I ran a marathon, it brought so much comfort for a hungry nursing mama! Yes, food often is comfort, and you'll need it after the fact!

I'm all for bringing homemade snacks and meals, but if that's the last thing on your mind in the days leading up to birth, you could also just bring some non-perishable healthy snacks such as Peeled fruit snacks, Pure Bars, or raw organic nuts.

Keep in mind that whatever can make your birth experience a peaceful one is up to you. This is my experience, yours may be different. Listen to your intuition and go with whatever brings you beauty and peace.

What helped make your birth experience peaceful? Or what helped you make peace with a birth that didn't go as planned?
