Kale Chips Recipe

We are always looking for healthy snacks that we can make at home because let's face it, store bought snacks can cost an arm and a leg today! These are fairly easy to make, just a little time consuming. We made them for the first time during the 2013 Super Bowl so that we had a healthy chips option. For the record, we actually don't follow football and the evening was all about just being together and eating good food! Oh, and remember those commercials? They made my jaw drop, that was horrible.

Back to the chips. They are crumbly, so you may want to put them right in your toddlers mouth and not have it in their hands or the floor will be covered in kale. I can't say it's something everyone will like. They are a little like thin paper, I enjoyed them - but it's not something I would eat every day.

The key to good kale chips is having the kale dry (a salad spinner would help, or just use towel/paper towels) and watching it in the oven. Since you can't really have them all perfectly the same size, the smaller pieces may be ready before the big ones and you kind of have to take them out of the oven one by one so that they don't burn while the rest are dehydrating.

Serves 4 to 6
Prep Time: 30 minutes
Bake Time: 20-25 minutes

Ingredients:

1 bunch kale
2 tbsp olive oil
1/4 tsp real salt

Directions:

1. Wash and completely dry all the kale. Chop of stalks and keep leaves only. Cut into chip size pieces. Place in large bowl.
2. Drizzle the olive oil evenly and massage the kale with your hands. This will take away the bitterness. Slowly add salt and gently mix.
3. Spread kale evenly on baking sheet, try placing them with the arches up, so the air circulates under the chips.
5. Bake at 250 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. Watch the chips closely past the 15 minute mark and remove any chips that are done one by one so that they do not burn. It's okay to open the door often and let any trapped moisture in the oven escape.
6. Let cool and serve, we love serving them in small bamboo bowls or wooden ones

  1. Love those, actually tried different recipes, with sun dried tomatoes and other spices. I love, love kale chips! One time we bought a little box at the Whole foods store and it was $8 i loved the taste but i can't quite make the same once even knowing the ingredients. I can't wait to grow my own organic kale and make lots of chips.

  6. my boyfriend and I tried these a couple of months ago. I have to say I totally agree with you about the smaller pieces having to be taken out earlier than the others.. we had a bunch of extra crispy (aka BURNT) little pieces that were just not appetizing.

  16. My son's favorite food is kale. I might try and make them. Right now my favorite thing to do with kale is make pesto. So far the best recipe I have found is http://dishingupthedirt.com/uncategorized/apple-picking-and-pesto/ Oh and the sweet potato sandwich with this pesto she has on her blog is AMAZING.

  18. I've been wanting to try kale chips! So healthy. I use kale quite a bit in cooking, but I usually shred it up to "hide" it. I'd love to make it taste good on its own.
