Grasping for the Small Things {photos}

Baby T has been teaching me something important lately. He loves playing with awfully-close-to-being-a-choking-hazard items. He doesn't have much interest in big toys. He likes Baby E's hair clips, medium-size bouncy balls, pieces of paper he discovers, rocks that fit his palm, grasshoppers (!), you get the idea. This is turning me into a hawk, trying to get all the little stuff out of his way.

It also got me thinking about...

small things

Some days I get so wrapped up in thinking big that I forget to notice his tiny feet and chubby little hands that will not be this way for long.

Some days I just have to force myself to stop and look at Baby E's haven't-been-cut-since-birth hair, the way it shimmers in the sun, the way it falls on her face. Sometimes I have to let go of the fact that this girl loves to play in the dirt and just let her be.

Sometimes I stop focusing on how many times they 'fight' and instead savor the moments that they share and laugh together. Savor the fact that they even have each other to grow up together.

So I am on a quest to downsize. When it comes to slowing down and enjoying the little moments, the small things. I love to dream big - but sometimes we need to focus on small to eventually realize it makes the big that much more enjoyable. Otherwise we'll just drive ourselves insane trying to be super parents. To have the biggest, smartest, latest.

Stop rushing. Hug your little people and remind yourself once again that they matter and small moments matter. Everything else can wait.

Photos:
1. Baby T really wanted to grab that grasshopper, don't worry, no insects were harmed.
2. Love his pudgy hands!
3. At our fall family photo shoot, caught this moment as I was getting the camera ready and set up.
4. Playing with leaves by our house.

    2. What type of camera do you use and what is your most-used lens? I'm in the market to buy a new one and all of your photos are great!

    3. Beth, I use a Nikon D7000 with 24-70mm f/2.8G ED AF-S Nikkor Zoom Lens. It's been a learning curve, but I love it and finally feel comfortable shooting in manual all the time. Still have so much to learn! The grasshopper shot was captured by my husband actually, I was holding Baby T. But we're kind of a team, we do most of the shooting together while exchanging tips, ideas, and passing the baby and camera around :)

  3. Such a beautiful post! Yesterday I posted a picture of my youngest grandson on Facebook and just happened to notice the photo really showed his hands. It made me think that soon he wouldn't have those chubby little baby fingers and this makes me sad. I wish my grandchildren would just stop where they are and stay this way forever!

  5. Your photos are fantastic!!! My kids love to feel things too, so I try to let them have lots of sensory play. Fill a tray with dry rice or beans, and hide stuff in it. Hours of fun.

    1. We love doing that too! Baby E loved playing with a package of dried split peas that I put in a bin for her. I would have to watch very closely and play with them if Baby T is involved though, he is up to no good with putting things in his mouth.

  11. Lovely photos! I have 7 children that range from 20 (how did that happen?) to 5 months. One plus to having an adult child and a baby is that you realize how breathtakingly fast it all goes. Treasure those little things. My little baby has already grown and changed so much it makes me choke a little. I'm at peace with our decision to end our child bearing years but it certainly adds urgency to my need to cherish each moment.
