We Are Back from Washington D.C.!

Yes, your inbox just got a more than 10 day break from our emails! We went on a road trip and decided to tell you all about it after the fact. We really needed a break from blogging, real life, and laundry. It was rather liberating. But we are so glad to be back home! You have no idea. Details with lots of photos coming soon. Meanwhile...

Here are some things I already miss about our travels....
  • No cooking: we packed most of our food with us and ate out a couple of times. It was so nice to get a break from my kitchen! I even let my family eat the who-knows-whats-in-it free breakfast at the hotel.
  • No laundry: I loved the much needed break from cloth diapers. I also loved that one Bambo Nature diaper lasts pretty much through a whole day of sightseeing! Amazing! That's about 6-8 hours without leaks or stink :)
  • No work: I checked my email a few times, but for the most part I ignored everything to have to do with work (though I worked a ton before we left so that work stuff was scheduled while I was away). I have to admit, being tied to the computer every day for so long is tiring. It was nice to not think about it for a few days. I need to do this more often!
  • Photo opportunities: Love taking photos of my kids, but the sites of D.C. certainly beat our playground for photo impact.
  • Spontaneity: Although even at home our 'schedule' is rather random, I loved not having a predictable rhythm. Like when we arrived at our destination and discovered we can check in early, we decided we should go to D.C. that day and start exploring right away.
  • Our hotel room: It made me realize how little we need and that we need to downsize what we have (in terms of stuff). We got a free upgrade to a king suite and it was the perfect size, even with room for toddler to run around. Oh, and I loved having someone make the bed for me after we left the room each morning!
  • King Size Bed: Loved it! What were we thinking getting a queen at home? Oh, that's right, we had no idea that co-sleeping would work so well for us.

And here are some things I don't miss at all!
  • Being the family with a very loud, screaming, teething infant right in front of the White House
  • 90 degree humid weather
  • 1 hour public transportation commute to D.C. with two little kids
  • Having infant strapped into car seat while he screams on a road trip, feeling like there is nothing I can do
  • Feeling like a total tourist, reading maps wrong, walking the wrong way, paying too much for transportation, etc.
  • Tired, fussy kids who are too young to remember this trip anyway
  • Having to jump start our car battery
  • Lugging all the things we needed to have with us each day for sightseeing (water was the heaviest)
Traveling is fun, but having a home to come back to is better! Have you been traveling lately?

  1. Sounds like fun, with kids you just have to suck it up =)
Speaking about weather, not sure how its where you are but 90 degree humidity is where we are right now, i had to take kids to water park to cool off.

  2. We were last on vacation in October. We had a 5 month old and a 2.5 year old at the time. We visited my husband's family in southern California and went to Disneyland. It was a lot of fun and went surprisingly amazing. :)

  4. We co-slept in a full size bed for ages. Until, that is, we went on vacation, and got to experience a king size bed with her. WORLD of difference.

  5. So jealous! I've wanted to go to D.C. since I was very little. It's nice to read that traveling with little ones wasn't all bad :)
