Preterm Labor and Diet Soda

Diet soda junkie? Pregnant? You may want to look into why that's a really bad combination. I'm not even going to go into why soda in general isn't good for you. But when it comes to artificial sweeteners in diet soda, the unborn have a lot to tell us. Such a high increase (as much as 78%) in premature deliveries can hardly be called a coincidence. Funny thing, regular sugar sweetened soda does not have the same effect at all.  Check out my recent article on Boston Today's Mama and you just may think twice about this unhealthy addiction:

  1. I used to drink diet soda but I stopped and I feel much better.

  2. Thank you for sharing! I don't drink soda at all and I don't buy it for my husband either. He usually has a few sodas a year, but better than having one every day. I'm originally from Eastern Europe (Moldova), so we're used to drinking mineral water and juices. I didn't grow up drinking soda like a lot of families in America.

Btw, I love your green and eco-friendly giveaways!

  3. Interesting article. I can't remember the last time I drank a soda. It was probably on an airplane, since that's the only time I ever drink them (not sure why, but I do). Anyway, I've found that cutting them out of my diet hasn't been a big sacrifice and when you're not used to drinking them, they actually taste pretty gross. I think drinking any kind of sugary drink -- be it soda, diet soda or juice -- is bad for your body.

This research is a good warning for pregnant women, but I definitely think the message applies to all of us -- pregnant or not.

  4. i find diet soda disgusting anyway, but what was interesting was that for my first pregnancy, if I ate or smelled anything that had aspartame, I got very sick and nauseous. This time around I've been cooking much more from scratch, so artificial sweeteners haven't come within 5 feet of me. :P

  5. Wow. I am not a soda drinker at all, but I had no idea! This is something midwives and doctors should be sharing with moms-to-be, particularly those who may already be at risk for preterm labor (like I was, with my twins)!
