First, if you're a guy, stop reading now - this is none of your business. Second, I'm quite comfortable talking about this with women - so stick around! I have long ago switched to healthier and more sustainable management of my period. It is quite liberating to not have to make that monthly trip to the store to buy plastic sanitary pads or tampons. I've been using The Keeper (natural gum rubber) ever since my periods returned after the first baby and I really love it. Not only am I saving a ton of money, it is just so much more convenient and comfortable. I wish I knew about it earlier.
The thought of giving birth and then having to wear those unwieldy, hospital issued, gigantic sanitary postpartum pads just makes recovery unwelcome. Well, thankfully I will not be at a hospital but a birth center. But when I'm home a short 12 hours after birth, the Lunapads Organic Cotton Postpartum Kit that I was sent for review will really come in handy. After giving birth, wouldn't you want the softest thing possible down there? These gorgeous looking pads are sooooo soft! Sure, the price is a little steep compared to the 'free' ones (included in your whopping hospital bill) at the hospital (on sale for $62.96). But remember, you'll use them again and again. They'll pay for themselves when your period returns or if you have more babies.
I was also sent a pair of Hipster Lunapanties to try. Well, comfortable is an understatement! If I could I would replace all my undies with these. They are awesome for everyday, especially during pregnancy for that unexpected discharge. They can be used with or without a liner. I just wish they were less expensive, at $29.99 each I would have a really hard time justifying the price tag to my husband when he sees the bank statement! They are on sale now for $25.49.
Taking care of reusable pads is not as hard as you may think. A quick rinse (if they are heavily saturated) and toss in the wash with regular detergent (preferably non-toxic). To take care of any stains, Buncha Farmers will do the trick.
