Bohemme Waldorf Doll Review

We have recently adopted a new member into our family. Baby E has named her Kukala which is the Russian word for 'doll'. I gave her name suggestions, but she'll have none of it - Kukala it is. This doll is very special because it is baby E's first doll. How many baby girls do you know that wait until they're 20 months to get their first doll? Not many. You see, I didn't want just any old plastic or toxic vinyl doll for her. Not too crazy about the realistic ones either that have perfect baby faces and cry. That's why we've waited all this time for something special and it was truly worth the wait!

Quality & Value: This 17" smiling Waldorf doll is the epitome of quality. Unlike mass manufacturing, there is careful attention to every detail and all materials are as safe as can be for your baby. We asked that the doll have blue eyes just like baby E, they'll be best friends forever. This doll has a lot of hair, which was especially made to be a unique mix of light and medium browns. I could probably make a hat and mitten set out of that much yarn! My daughter tends to grab the doll by the hair, so we had to pull it back into a ponytail. When she is older I am sure she will enjoy making all kinds of braids and hairstyles with them. I love the simplicity of the doll, it leaves more to the imagination of the child that plays with it.

When buying a handmade Waldorf doll, consider what you are getting for your money. At $140, it should be a thoughtful purchase. I look at it this way, I would rather my daughter have one unique, non-toxic doll than four dolls made in a factory in China - made of who knows what. Hundreds of toys are recalled every month, most of them from China, I personally don't want lead, antimony, or other toxic chemicals in our toys. This doll is made with love in every stitch and I think you are getting a great deal for this price!

How is this green: Supporting handmade, US made, non-toxic toys is a great Eco-friendly choice. The doll is made of renewable and healthy materials such as cotton, bamboo and alpaca.

About Bohemme: Rachel creates unique, mostly vegan Waldorf dolls and occasionally other handmade items that you can buy in her Etsy store. Holiday custom orders for full size dolls are open until November 15 at the discounted price of $112. Following that date there will be a limited number of rustic Waldorf dolls available for $50 each.

A note to my readers from Rachel, the doll maker: "A handmade Waldorf doll is the sort of toy you buy only once: it's very much like adopting a new member of your family. Unlike mass-produced plastic dolls, Waldorf dolls are always one of a kind and become a treasured part of your little one's childhood. So much attention is paid to the details of your doll as it is being made: every stitch, every piece of yarn and every piece of stuffing that goes inside is placed with care and much love. When your doll arrives at your home, you can be sure that she's ready for a lifetime of love and hugs."

Who Would You Recommend this to? Perfect as a gift or 'just because' for any little girl on your list. A doll this size I would recommend to babies over 18 months. If you're looking for non-toxic doll options without vinyl, formaldehyde, carcinogens, etc... this is the way to go!
