2012 in 2012: Week 24

What have we gotten rid of so far in 2012?

Photo of the donation bundle. Feels good to get rid of it and nice to give it to someone who needs it instead of wasting my time posting it on craigslist for a few bucks :)

I am gearing up for another big donation on the 25th. This works great for me because if I schedule it, I feel like I must.purge.now. It's so much easier to let go of things when you know that truck is coming and you want as much out of your house as possible! I highly recommend finding an organization in your area that takes donations for clothing and household items, many of them do at home pick ups. You probably received a flier in the mail many times and didn't even notice. Another great way to force yourself to get rid of clutter - invite some guests! My half sister is coming soon from the other side of the globe and it is a great opportunity to make our home more presentable :)

I sold another craigslist item, a shoe rack that was too huge for our home, new in the box (that I received by mistake when I won a giveaway). It was a nuisance that was standing right in our entryway, glad to have gotten rid of it.

We're almost half way through the year. Yes, it looks like there is no way I'll get to 2012, I don't think it is possible! But you know what, that's fine by me. I'll keep on going even if I never get there.

Moving on:

42 toys (donated)
40 clothing items (donated)
10 books (donated)
8 broken toy pieces (trash)
1 shoe rack (sold)

Total = 496 of 2012
as of June 16th

Selling Stuff YTD: made $720

  1. What a great idea! I think I want to set a goal of the # of items that I can purge as well! The only problem is that I'm addicted to not only selling items on Craigslist and other list-servs, but I'm also addicted to BUYING items at a discounted price too!

  2. That's awesome that you've made over $700 so far! We just moved a few months ago and purged a ton of stuff so that was our way of making ourselves trim down. If we would've had more time, I would have liked to try to sell some of it to make money but most ended up donated or given to family.

    1. Yes, when there's a moving deadline things need to go fast and craigslist doesn't give you that luxury all the time (unless you post stuff really cheap or free). I know someday we'll be moving, so I want to get rid of as much as I can while time is on our side. :)

  4. That's awesome! I love that you're keeping track of it here on your blog. I've been getting things together for a big donation too, trying to get the home ready for baby! :)

  5. That is an AWESOME goal!! I need to do something like that. In 2005, I moved into an apartment from a house, with a semi truck. I had to declutter the ENTIRE house in 2009, because I was pregnant, and we became a blended family, so moving too much ACTUAL 'stuff' was way too much work for me. We downsized even MORE in 2011, but we were a family of 6 at that point, and because someone else was moving us across the country and I was newly pregnant again, we didn't really declutter as much as I would have liked.....Now we are a family of 7 and I have SERIOUS work to do in this house, but DH is working full time now, and I have a daycare baby that I'm taking care of. DH destroyed his shoe at work one day and we literally tore this entire house apart and could not find his other pair. We emptied 15 diaper boxes that were half full that day, and three bags of trash trying to reorganize the closets in our house. They are still pretty fully boxed up. If they remain that way too much longer, we will be donating full boxes of stuff, one at a time, to where ever we can. I'm super motivated to do it, I just can't make the time between crazy kids, daycare, and not having enough hands to manage people. I don't want to sit for 20 minutes and then have to drop everything I was doing! I need to sit for 5 hours LOL

    1. Thanks! It does seem overwhelming though, we still have so much to get rid of! Good for you on getting started, it must be even harder with such a big family! Every little bit we get rid of just makes it easier to breathe, doesn't it? Clutter has wasted so much of my time! Just moving it from place to place and not addressing the problem is such a nuisance :0
