Oatmeal Raisin Cookie Recipe

Baby E making cookies

We love oatmeal raisin cookies in this house, they are our go to snack, always stocked in the cookie jar. I add some secret fabulous healthiness to them. There are certainly healthier snacks, but we simply can't live without cookies here. For my husband this is a long way from the super processed, super sweet, thirty ingredient store bought cookies he was addicted to!

Is it the best oatmeal raisin cookie recipe that exists? Maybe not. But what counts is that it works for us and we've made it our own. Feel free to take it, run with it, make it your own. I didn't create it myself, I took the recipe from a good friend and altered it a bit to suit our tastes.

It is a great snack for pregnant or nursing moms as it doesn't contain allergens like nuts and chocolate (at least things my infant doesn't tolerate well). Make it even better by substituting the sugar with molasses, maple syrup, or honey. If you like them more soft and gooey, reduce the flour by one quarter of a cup. I have much less sugar than the original recipe, we just don't like things overly sweet, feel free to add more!

Ingredients:
1/3 cup white sugar
1/3 cup raw cane sugar
3 sticks butter, melted (we use Kate's from Maine)
3 eggs beaten (organic or free range would be nice!)
1 teaspoon madagascar vanilla
1 tablespoon flax seed
1 tablespoon wheat germ
1 teaspoon cinnamon
2 cups flour (try 1/2 whole wheat)
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 to 3 cups oatmeal
1/2 to 1 cup organic raisins (because non-organic are really high in pesticides)

Directions:
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
2. Mix ingredients in a large mixing bowl in the above order. I use my vintage KitchenAid, so much easier.
3. Spoon (I use my hands) 2" round dough balls onto two baking sheets, 3 by 4 cookies.
4. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 to 17 minutes depending on your oven and how dark you like them.
5. Let cool, enjoy!

Any questions?

Makes 24 medium/large cookies (2 cookie sheets)

  1. I got a slightly different recipe from you the other day, and different proportions. I change my recipe off and on. I tried so many oatmeal cookies and brown sugar in my view makes them taste far better than having white sugar. Also i put cranberries for tartness and walnut for a crunch.

  2. I thought I gave you the same one, maybe I forgot something? I was writing to you from memory. I know brown sugar makes them taste better, I agree! But we bought white in bulk and I can't afford to leave it and use more expensive brown or raw cane, that's why I mix the two. I can't use nuts because baby T breaks out from them. :) I do love nuts though!

    1. We prefer to use unrefined and minimally processed products. Regular sugar goes through a lot of processing and is often even mixed with beet sugar that is mostly GMO (genetically modified in a lab to contain pesticides as part of genetic makeup). But quite simply I also think it tastes way better! Here is a run down of benefits: http://simplehomemade.net/whole-cane-sugar-a-better-way-to-sweeten/
