Boob Nursing Wear Stella Dress Review

I love how easy it is to nurse discreetly when wearing clothing specifically designed for nursing. It looks like my nursing days will not be over anytime soon, so I like to have a variety of nursing pieces in my wardrobe. This little Stella dress/tunic from Boob Nursing Wear makes a perfect, long sleeve outfit for our cold New England winters. It is made of super soft, easily washable Lyocell fabric, an Eco friendly plant cellulose material that does not use harmful chemicals in production.

Even though I believe nursing clothing isn't a necessity, I find myself wearing nothing but nursing tops when I leave the house with the infant. It just makes life so much easier! I can feed the baby anywhere without anyone even noticing. If you're pregnant with your first or fifth and you've never tried clothing designed for nursing, you're missing out. Even if you only get one or two tops, you'll be glad you did when that baby arrives. I find myself nursing about 50% of the day now, when I'm home it doesn't matter what I wear, but when I leave the house I want to be comfortable with an infant no matter where I go. This was with a one week old at Thanksgiving dinner with family:

Baby E is Three!

Our little baby is not so little anymore! Baby E is three years old today. I still remember holding her for the first time. I remember how exhausted I was after a 12 hour labor and two and a half hours of pushing. As I held her in my arms I thought to myself "That wasn't fun, but I would do it again!"

Yesterday we took her to the Boston Children's Museum for some fun with mommy, daddy, baby brother, and grandma. She had a blast and of course so did we, because the most exciting thing for parents is watching their kids exploring, learning, and being inquisitive. Here she is above playing with tangrams on a light table.

She was thrilled with the real stove cut down to a child's level as she was with the fridge, giant bubbles, water play, and play tent. In reality, she is one of those children that needs very little to be excited. At least we raised her that way. I love seeing the joy on her face from making a pie or getting a new set of hair bows. She likes the simple things in life. She's easy to please! So this trip was like a huge party for her (even with the absence of an actual birthday party). At the same time, lately I've been walking on eggshells with her. She's always been a sensitive little girl, but even more so with the arrival of her little brother. You know how toddlers react if you give them a spoon instead of a fork, if you close the book too soon at bedtime, or you put their play purse in the wrong spot? Yeah, we've had our share of that lately.

Despite all the behavior troubles, these little toddlers-turning-pre-schoolers light up our life anyway. They teach us patience, perseverance, love, joy, contentment, among other things. They show us things we never knew about ourselves, positive and negative traits discovered only when we become parents, they mirror us in so many ways. I wouldn't be who I am if I never became a mother. It's an honor to be baby E's mom and to raise her to love God and people.

2012 in 2012: Week 4 [First before/after pics]

I mean about all the junk in our homes...

What have we gotten rid of so far in 2012?

I honestly haven't thrown out much because of a family week of the flu. But what counts is that I am throwing things out and I always find myself thinking about the next thing to get rid of. Selling items isn't so easy, especially when you want to get good money for them. I suspect that during spring cleaning I will need several days where my mother would take the kids outside and I could focus on cleaning our closets, that's where the majority of our decluttering will take place and where hundreds of unneeded items hide.

Moving on:

10 random old personal care items (trash)
5 husband's old [mostly empty] deodorants (trash)

1 handful small broken toy parts (trash)

1 closet full (more like overflowing, see below) of recycling (recycled, of course)

It has been two months since giving birth to baby T. Most women would be thrilled, but I am not very excited to be back at my pre-pregnancy weight so fast (please hold the tomatoes!), ever since my first pregnancy I've been struggling to keep up my weight. This will probably be good as I get older, but at the moment it is so hard to eat enough while breastfeeding! Between all the cooking, cleaning, diaper changes, and coping with toddler behavior - it's hard to find time to eat full meals. But I eat a lot, way more than I ever did before, I guess that's how it is breastfeeding a little man with my metabolism!

I'm back at my weight, but that doesn't mean my tummy looks like it did before the baby. That's where the Wink Nurse N Blast Tank Top works wonders. Just like the Ultimate Postpartum Bikini and the C-Section Bikini, it has a compression layer that makes it possible to fit into pre-pregnancy jeans and it helps with postpartum healing. Only in this case you also have it conveniently function as a nursing tank top. I love having the two functions in one, that's one less thing to have to put on. It is long and extends past the hips, giving you compression exactly where you need it. I have the black tank top and it goes well with everything. There are soft cups that for me, eliminate the need for a bra, it looks great without one.

The tank is a little bit tough to pull on, as you would expect from something with compression, but it isn't impossible. Also, I had some trouble with the nursing clasps because the front isn't attached to the straps once you open it, I had to fish for the straps in the back. But lucky for you, I was one of the first to test it, so moving on the tanks will be modified to be easier to close the nursing clasp - with the front attached to the strap somehow so you don't loose it behind you. The Nurse n Blast Tank Top is quite expensive at $74.99, but you are paying for a quality compression garment, this isn't just any old nursing tank. Overall I love the tank and the two purposes it serves, it's a great postpartum product to have to help you get back in shape.

MIA: Flu, Viruses, and Other Pretty Things

The three of us outside today, for the first time in more than a week (baby in wrap under my coat), first real snow of the season, below zero.

So I got a break from blogging, but not in the way I wanted. We haven't been so sick in a very long time. A great reminder of how mortal we are... We're finally getting over this virus/flu thing, whatever it was. Fever for four days for my toddler, non-stop. One of those days she cried and whined from the moment she woke up to the moment she went to bed. Now that was a trying day. With the two month old in my arms, with a fever as well, I tried to comfort baby E.

She just wanted me to hold her.

Somehow I think she had it the worst because she really misses the time it was just the two of us at home all day. Playing hide-and-seek, building forts, making cookies. As much as I try to devote some time to her alone, it's nearly impossible with so many diaper changes, nursing sessions, and holding-infant-crying-for-no-reason moments. Never mind that I had a fever as well, no sick days here. Being sick wasn't half as painful as watching my little ones suffer!

2012 in 2012: Week 2

So how is it going?

What have we gotten rid of so far in 2012?

One of the things that I haven't gotten around to is getting rid of old open bottles of shampoo/conditioner that we no longer use. They are either toxic ones we no longer use, something natural that 'spoiled' because it has no preservatives/chemicals in it, or simply something that didn't work for my hair (in which case I should give it to someone else to try). I have even more personal care items like this that need to be tossed, they are just old and taking up space. So you'll see a lot of these on my list in the coming weeks. Do you have anything like that laying around that you should get rid of? Old makeup, deodorant, fragrances, etc... Oh, and the plant... I have yet to keep one that doesn't die in my home, I forget to water them. I prefer cacti. :)

I better start throwing out more stuff each week if I want to get to my goal!

Baby T is 8 Weeks Old

Is it true that time flies faster with every child you have? At least I think so.

All four of us are sick with what seems like the flu. Fever, cough, congestion. First hubby, then baby E, me, and baby T. Not even two months old and already sick, painful for any mom to watch.

Snuggled up infant in a wrap carrier on my chest, stuffy nosed, dosing on and off. One of my arms wrapped around my [not so] little girl, miserable with a fever. I close my eyes, dream of spring and fresh outdoor air, praying for my babies and knowing that this too shall pass...

BabyOta Swaddle Review & Giveaway

How much would you pay for more sleep? Ask any mom of a newborn and you're likely to hear that sleep is what she misses most. When I was contacted with an offer to review the BabyOta I was eight months pregnant and I thought I really didn't need it for my soon-to-be-born baby. My first never likes being swaddled, so I didn't think much of it. Fast forward to November 17th, I gave birth to baby T, a handsome boy. Guess what? He would sleep only when swaddled, nice and tight.

So that's the story of how I caved in to try the BabyOta, and I'm so glad I did! The first night in it baby T slept for six hours straight and didn't even wake to eat, I had to pinch myself. Since then he loves sleeping in it, though not as long - he is a fast growing frequent eater. It has made life so much easier for us because I can carry him in it from room to room without waking him (most times). It is perfect to keep him snuggled for walks outside, when we're brave enough to face cold temperatures. I love how easy it is to wrap him in it, takes all of about thirty seconds. The head is cradled in the 'blanket' and I find that makes holding him and moving him from place to place easier, plus he doesn't wake from cold hands. It can be tied up tight or loose depending on how your baby likes it and you can keep the arms out or in, baby T likes them out.

The BabyOta reminds me a lot of how babies used to be wrapped up in a blanket back in Russia, where I come from. That makes perfect sense since the BabyOta takes after a centuries old practice in the Czech Republic. I thought it looked odd at first to have the baby wrapped up in a thick blanket, now I know just how practical it is!

I love the material of this baby swaddle, it isn't too warm. The bamboo is soft, breathable and eco-friendly, as well as easy to wash. The cover unzips for laundry. It is perfect for about the first three months, at 8 weeks baby T is starting to outgrow it already. If there is any way to improve the BabyOta, it would be nice if it was somehow extendable for a longer/taller baby and I would love to see some sort of detachable liners in the area of the baby's head for catching dribbles and spit up (so you wouldn't have to wash the whole thing too often). I've tried just using a burp cloth under the baby's head for that purpose, but it tends to fall on the baby's face. I personally love the natural, off-white color, but I'm sure some people would be interested in a variety of prints and colors to choose from - in sustainable fabrics of course.

You may remember we previously reviewed an organic merino toddler clothing set (which is my toddler's favorite, most comfy outfit) and newborn merino beanie, mittens, and booties from Natureshop. I'll admit he wore it for two days straight, I didn't want to take it off him. It is so warm and cozy, it keeps his temperature comfortable and it works great with cloth diapers. Colief Drops Review & Giveaway: Transient Lactase Deficiency and Colic

When our first baby was two weeks old, we ended up at the Children's Hospital in Boston. Never mind the non-stop crying associated with colic, her spit up was tinted pink with blood and there was some in her stool as well. We were exhausted new parents, not knowing how to help her. I then remembered just how much organic milk I drank while I was pregnant and wondered if that contributed to her milk protein intolerance.

Now when a new mom tells me her baby's symptoms that sound just like what my daughter had, I can just recommend she try Colief. This isn't a 'resolution' and I am not going to get upset if this project falls by the wayside further into the year. I'm not going to punish you either. But here it is...

Who's with me? Stuff sitting unused in closets for more than a year, clothing I haven't worn since having my first baby three years ago (despite the fact it still fits, it's just not mom material). Husband's tools in places they shouldn't be. Books I know I will not read again. Things behind the couch. The 'incoming mail' box stuffed full. That corner. You get the point.

I'll be posting my count every couple of weeks, and occasionally before and after photos of my messes. You can post what you got rid of in the comments as well. Keep in mind you don't have to throw it all out, consider selling (craigslist), donating, and freecycling. Just make sure to keep count, it is encouraging the closer you get to 2012 items! Naturepedic Organic Changing Pad Review & Giveaway (02/02)

When baby T was born in November, I didn't have a safe place to change him. I made do with our bed (a mattress on the floor) and a waterproof sheet over it. Of course that couldn't last forever, especially when I realized I'll be changing him a lot throughout the day and I can't keep on moving this on and off the bed. So I was thankful and excited when Naturepedic sent us the Organic Changing Pad for review.

Since we have no changing table or any room for one, I placed this non-toxic changing pad on top of our dresser and it is at the perfect height for changing the baby. Plus it is convenient since the entire cloth diaper stash is in a drawer right below. I appreciate that it has four sides, so there is no spot for baby to scoot out. Of course the best thing about it is that the surface is organic cotton coated with clear, food-grade polyethylene - not toxic vinyl! I avoid vinyl in my home like the plague, not so much for environmental reasons as for health and indoor air issues. Vinyl is toxic and a known human carcinogen, nuff said.

The core of the changing pad is just as important, instead of toxic polyurethane, this one is made of Air-Core - food grade polyethylene network of closed cell air pockets. The fabulous, high quality materials make for the best changing pad I've ever seen, and of course - no stink! You know how new vinyl smells like chemicals? I'm so glad not to have to deal with that. So if it was up to me, it would be either Naturepedic's Organic Changing Pad or nothing at all. I am very sensitive to chemical smells, I can't even pass by a person who uses Tide or other toxic detergent without feeling like I want to gag. Neither would I want my baby smelling something so toxic if I have a choice. Of course I want to share this absolutely awesome product with one of you...

Living in a three story town home is not always fun with a toddler in potty training phase. Actually we're officially completely diaper free as of two weeks ago. We have been using the Pourty potty for one month and we love it! Why do the Europeans come up with all the most practical products? Designed in the U.K. and surprisingly even made in England, not China. How's that for a shocker?

Best of all of course is that my toddler loved it right out of the box. She literally sat on it the moment I took it out (with her clothes on). She exclaimed "Kakoy klasniy gorshochek!", which in Russian means "What a cool potty!" I'm glad she loves it, but I think I love it even more! The design makes emptying the Pourty so much easier. I am starting to avoid our other potty, which works fine - but it is so much more of a hassle to get clean. We keep one on the first floor and one on the second where we sleep (where our toilet is out of order).

We couldn't quite get baby E fully potty trained primarily because at three years old she is too short and tiny to get herself on the toilet fast enough. We would keep the potty training toilet seat on the toilet downstairs and her old potty on the second floor. The Pourty did the trick because it obviously makes it so much easier for her to go without needing my help no matter what floor she is on. It is also very comfortable according to my toddler, she prefers this one over her old potty. There is another hidden benefit of this 'easy to pour out' design, that is that the tailbone is relieved of the pressure from sitting on the potty because of the cutout in the back. Some ergonomic office chairs are designed the same way. I also like that it is made of a sturdy plastic that doesn't bend. I appreciate the neutral white color that it comes in, it looks unobtrusive in our bathroom. The blue, pink, and also purple (not shown) are great for a kids bathroom if you want a splash of color (or if your princess insists on everything pink).

Thirsties Fab Fitted and Duo Wrap Review

I am living in diaper land 24/7 right now. That's life with a newborn. Sometimes it drives me nuts that I do not have more than two of the same brand diapers, they are all different. Bonus is that it makes me kind of an expert! I've lost count, but we have about 25 to 30 different brands. I've always loved Thirsties and I was excited to finally test them on a newborn. I received a Fab Fitted with snaps and a Duo Wrap with snaps to try on baby T.

Why do I love this combination? Because it is nearly bulletproof, yet very trim. It's my go to for putting under cute outfits because I know it will not ruin the outfit with leaks and we can avoid the 'cloth diaper butt' phenomenon. That was okay on a girl, but on my son - you know, a big bum would look a tad weird (I'm just being dramatic).

Don't let the slim look of the Fab Fitted deceive you. Our one month old pees A LOT. My first was a girl, so this is new to me. He just pees non-stop and his diapers are always so wet and full. While this fitted gets soaked, his bum remains dry to the touch and the Duo Wrap is really great at containing everything. Even if a tiny bit of a blowout escapes the fitted, which is rare, the cover takes care of it. I like it so much I'm thinking of buying a couple more Fab Fitteds to use with the same cover.

Another thing to love is the two sizes it comes in. Doesn't break the bank completely like sized diapers do, but the perfect sizing really does offer a perfect fit. In the photo (7 lbs 7 oz) of the diaper on my newborn it is actually very trim compared to other cloth diapers I put on him. Now he is weighing 10 lbs 8 oz and it fits really nice, I have it on the middle snap setting and it will probably fit him for another three months (he is getting very chubby).

Cure Tooth Decay and Healing Our Children Book Reviews and Giveaway

As I mentioned in my Green Pasture review (and giveaway!), my three year old daughter's teeth are not in very good shape. What I thought was fluorosis is actually a dietary problem that goes deeper than that. In my search for answers I found Ramiel Nagel's book, Cure Tooth Decay. The title itself is intriguing since most dentists will have you believe that tooth decay can only be managed, not cured. Even more intriguing is the fact that many people have successfully cured cavities, severe tooth problems, and straightened crooked teeth by following the traditional diet outlined by Dr. Weston A. Price and the tips offered in Ramiel's book.

It was very interesting to learn that indigenous people who consumed traditional foods had perfect, straight, and strong teeth. They didn't even have toothbrushes. As soon as they succumbed to the modern processed food diet, their teeth visibly deteriorated. Tooth health begins from the inside out, whatever we eat directly affects what our teeth will look like. This book offered answers that I couldn't find anywhere else, as well as a lot of practical advice. I highly recommend it if you or anyone in your family have tooth problems. I'll warn you though that if you don't already eat healthy foods, it will be quite an adjustment. If you already avoid processed, store-bought foods (like we try), it is still an eye opener and you'll find yourself nodding your head as you read and realize that what is considered 'healthy' by our standards is in fact a very modern way of eating that was not part of our ancestors' diets. All food used to be organic and natural at one point, just a short 100 years ago. Now we have to read labels since it is no longer so.

I also received Ramiel's other book, Healing Our Children. This book is a goldmine of valuable information for parents striving to lead a natural lifestyle with their children. It has some of the same information found in Cure Tooth Decay, and a lot more pertaining to fertility, pregnancy, birth, breastfeeding, and parenting specifically. A lot of controversial subjects are covered, the answers are pretty straight forward. You may even find it offensive if you are a bottle feeding, Ferberizing ('cry it out'), non baby-wearing, fully vaccinating, daycare embracing parent. Either offensive or eye opening, your choice. You'll also find proof of what children truly benefit from. If you want what is best for babies, the answers are here. This is a great present for any crunchy mama that you know, great for a baby shower, she will thank you later!

My three year old has tooth problems. I've been on a quest to find non-invasive ways to heal her teeth. I'm not going to go into why I avoid conventional dentists, but as you imagine the reasons aren't very different from why you would want to avoid conventional doctors who only know how to prescribe drugs and will not even ask you what you eat. A Simpler Christmas

The first Christmas was very simple. In fact, it wasn't Christmas at all, just an ordinary day with an extraordinary event - the birth of Jesus.

For many years I joined everyone I know in making Christmas more complicated than it has to be, and certainly not about Christ. It was all about tradition, about us, about myself. Presents, decorations, trees, tons of events, holiday foods (and overeating), and general busy-ness.

I got married, we had a baby. Suddenly the Christmas we knew was against everything we wanted to teach our children. Presents for those clearly not in need, gluttony, irresponsible and unnecessary spending, and general chaos. Everywhere you hear people complaining about how many more presents they still have to buy, how busy the holiday season is, how little time they have, so many things that 'need' to be done! Or do they?

Are we robbing ourselves of time? Skipping what's important and focusing on the material? Are we just doing what we feel obligated to do because of the expectations of our friends, family, society? Our homes and our families have to look perfect at Christmas, or so we're made to think.

Like everything we do here at Eco-Babyz, we are going against the grain. Again. We are so incredibly blessed to have so much more than we could possibly need. We have a healthy family, food, and jobs. There are many who don't. Actually, we're probably in the 10% of the world population that have clean drinking water and money in the bank. The last thing I want to do is go and spend that hard-earned money on more stuff when so many people go to sleep on an empty stomach, day after day. We simply do not want to be part of the spending frenzy of the holidays.

There are no presents in our home. There is no tree, even though we contemplated getting a real one (we love the smell and our toddler loves lights). No excessive holiday dinners hosted by us, sorry friends. No 'to do' lists. No 'must go' events to attend. We are spending the weekend living in the moment, thankful for the couple of days my husband has off work, enjoying being together today, because we aren't even guaranteed our next breath. Right now is all we have.

There is no 'perfect' Christmas scene in our home. I do not have it all together. It's not as clean as I would like it to be. I'm a little overwhelmed by my toddler's unpredictable behavior as a result adjusting to life with a baby brother. I'm not making any gourmet meals. When the babies are a bit older I would love to start our own traditions, serving those in need at Christmas time.

So do I look down on people who celebrate whichever holiday? No, not at all. You do whatever you think is right. Be honest with yourself.

Giving birth is no easy feat, that's for sure. I can actually say I enjoyed the labor part, in anticipation of meeting the little one. The aftermath isn't a lot of fun though. Those disposable pads that they give you were great for the first couple of days, I would not want to be dealing with washing those. I can only tolerate plastic for so long though. I was sent the Willow Store Feminine Pads for review, that's when they came in really handy.

For the childbirth healing process it's nice to have something soft and organic down there, not irritating plastic and chemicals. I loved these organic feminine pads that were very comfortable, absorbent, and didn't leak. Not to mention it is nice not to have to keep buying disposables. They are perfect as postpartum pads or for your regular period. You can customize absorbency to suit your needs by adding inserts (sort of like cloth diapers). They are very easy to wash, I just rinse them in cold water before throwing them in with the black laundry. A little pre-treat with stain remover doesn't hurt either.

Native Remedies Childbirth Products Review

Childbirth is probably the most painful thing most women will ever experience. No wonder man has been coming up with all kinds of ways to ease the pain. I gave birth without an epidural both times, but for the second birth I wanted to have some natural means of preparing for and coping with labor and birth pain. I used the Native Remedies Easiotomy Cream, AfterBirth Drops, and Nipple Conditioning Cream that I was sent for review. These three products are great to have for any mom attempting to have a natural, minimal intervention birth.

While I can't really say these products made things easier, since second births are almost always easier than the first, but I would like to think so! The biggest factor in making a difference was the fact that this was a water birth. But recovery was also so much easier. I took the AfterBirth Drops during the last stage of labor and after the birth. I also took arnica during labor and for several days after birth. I really think it was a combination of all these factors that made recovery a breeze compared to the first birth. I was up on my feet at home making soup the next day, compared to the first time when I couldn't walk myself to the bathroom without help for three days following birth. The Easiotomy Cream isn't something I can evaluate because I didn't get a chance to use it much. In the days leading up to labor I was too busy entertaining my toddler. Plus, considering the tearing from the first birth, it was hard to avoid it this time. Thankfully the nipple cream has not come in handy, breastfeeding the second baby is so much easier than the first! But at least I was prepared for anything that came my way. The first time it was extremely painful, I wish I had this back then.

I think these products are a little bit overpriced considering you get so little use out of them, just immediately before and after birth. The Easiotomy Perenial Cream retails for $34.95, it is on sale for $19.95 right now, the AfterBirth Drops for postnatal recovery are $34.95 and on sale for $14.95, and the Nipple Conditioning Cream for breastfeeding is $34.95, on sale for $15.95. It really adds up if you're on a tight budget. Better get it while it is on sale! It's a great gift for a crunchy mama-to-be as well.

Laura Klein Photography Review and Baby T Newborn Photos!

A couple of weeks before baby T was born I remembered how much I regretted not having professional newborn photos with our first baby. So I went on a last minute hunt for a Boston area newborn photographer, one in particular stood out - Laura Klein Photography. She was able to accommodate us at her studio in North Hampton, New Hampshire on such short notice.

Laura is absolutely awesome and very talented! Despite the fact that baby T was not cooperating (he is always hungry) and we only had a one hour session, we got some great shots. She has a ton of props at her modern studio, you'll have a hard time picking something. We went with this cute white vintage scale and turquoise damask background pictured above and the lovely combination of fuzzy fabric with playful candy hat below. Baby T was only five days old in these photos.

Laura is great with children. My three year old daughter can feel people very well, she was at ease with Laura after just a couple of minutes. Baby E knows a good person when she meets one! She was also very quick (without making us feel rushed), professional, and easy to communicate with. I feel those three things are very important when it comes to choosing a photographer. As for talent, well, it's kind of obvious she's got it, I'll let the photos do the talking:

KoalaKin Hands-Free Breastfeeding Pouch Review

Thankfully nursing a second baby turned out to be a lot easier than the first. But I forgot just how time consuming it is! Nursing the first was easier because I had all the time in the world, though it was more painful. Nursing the second, and I imagine subsequent babies, is tough because you have to care for the other kids. This is where the KoalaKin has been a life saver for me! We were sent one for review with our newborn.

At first I thought that I wouldn't use it much, or that it would be too much hassle to put it on. I certainly was wrong! While I could do okay without a KoalaKin with one baby, having a toddler to care for - it has proved to be indispensable. I can wear the vest at home pretty much all day and attach/remove the pouch with the baby as needed throughout the day. In the photo below I'm wearing the KoalaKin at Thanksgiving dinner after I nursed the baby (with the pouch unsnapped). Baby T is one week old here!

I love how comfortable it is and how easy it is to use. I've tried nursing in a sling and gave up, the KoalaKin breastfeeding nursing pouch is so much easier and more intuitive. I could use it right out of the box without needing directions. I also appreciate how discreetly I can nurse with it, it almost doubles as a nursing cover - just without additional hassle. This is definitely a product I would recommend to all nursing moms, first timers or not. It frees up your hands to get things done while nursing. You may still need you hands to help the baby out the first month or so, when they need some help with the latch. After that the hands are pretty much all yours, you can eat your meal, work (great for WAHMs), read, tend to your toddlers, etc.

It can be used with a baby up to 25 pound (my 3 year old only weighs 27 pounds!). This is not a sling or baby carrier, it is intended for breastfeeding only. The KoalaKin retails for $89.99 and an optional extra pouch costs $39.99. I think it is a little expensive for a product with such specific use, but still worth it, I really can't think of anything like it. As I said, I use it pretty much all day. I wish they also came up with a way to make it into a baby carrier too with a different carrier attachment and safety strap. That way you would be able to get even more use out of it!

Baby T's Water Birth Story

[ten minutes after baby T was born]

I have a hard time believing I am a mom of two. I still feel like a little girl at times. We were so excited when we found out we would be adding another little human to our family. This second pregnancy flew by so fast, and now it seems the momentum is not ceasing, baby T will be already two weeks in just a couple of days. It seems that each baby propels life into an even faster whirlwind.

As any mother, I just wanted a healthy birth. I had my birth preferences typed up, as with baby E. I was just hoping and praying everything goes well - and if it happened just the way I hoped, even better. With the first birth I learned that being in a hospital automatically set me up for 'warfare'. Simply put, my ideas of birth clashed with everyone there, including my OB. I could feel the tension and I wanted to avoid that with this birth, hence we chose to give birth at a small birth center with a midwife.

What a huge difference! The moment I got there I knew this was going to be different. Everything was so peaceful. From the calm disposition of the midwife to the lights with dimmers, CD player with my favorite guitar music. A big full size bed where hubby and I could nap as my contractions progressed. A tub full of warm water. It all seemed too good to be true.

It was midnight Thursday on the 17th of November. I just put my toddler to bed (yes, that late!) and I've been feeling something, couldn't tell exactly what. All evening I've had some tugging around the belly, I guess those were contractions. The baby was a week and a half overdue and I did not want to get an ultrasound (it would be the first) that Friday. I was dancing all evening with my toddler and bouncing on a balance ball in hopes of getting things going. As I lay down next to baby E, I felt what I knew was a contraction, I glanced at the clock. I timed them, they were eight minutes apart. My husband was supposed to be home from his second shift any minute. Around 12:30 am he walked in and I told him we were having the baby that night.

I finished packing my toddler's bag and my hospital bag. That included all the food for my husband and I since we weren't in a hospital. Around 2 am we put our toddler in the car in her sleep sack, she was quite upset at being woken up in the middle of the night, of course. We arrived at the birth center at 2:45 am, my mother was waiting there for us to take baby E to her house. My concerns about having a baby en route vanished.

My contractions slowed down when I was put on the monitor for twenty minutes. Then the midwife left and my husband and I took a nap on the large bed. I woke up with each contraction, but they were not very strong. Then about an hour later I woke up to a really strong one and was happy things were progressing. I labored alone for about half an hour and then woke up my husband and called the midwife. It was so nice to have that quiet time alone, without interruptions from any nurses or staff. It was just the three of us in the building.

I was ready to get in the tub and I didn't really know what to expect. The moment I got in, I knew it was worth the drive! It really took the edge off the labor. I could relax, I didn't have to hold on to my husband the way I did with the first birth (to the point that he had bruises!). The weightlessness made all the difference and I wouldn't have it any other way. My husband just sat right outside the tub, held my hand, encouraged me, and it was so relaxing for me to see him relaxed and not as worried as the first time. At 5:50 I started pushing and at 5:59 am our baby was born. Okay, so the water didn't really help much during the pushing part, I think they heard me screaming at the hospital across the street. The midwife pulled baby T up out of the water and right into my arms, what an amazing feeling! A few seconds later we realized we didn't even look to see who it was... My husband finally exclaimed "It's a boy!"

I got out of the tub, out came the placenta, I needed a few stitches (something I was really hoping to avoid, but alas not everything goes as planned), we snuggled in bed with our baby boy. We started munching on sandwiches I made and oatmeal raisin cookies. I was starving after all that work! I loved how little interference there was from the midwives, they basically came when I asked them to. Nine hours later we went home. With the first birth I couldn't walk for two days, the twelve hours of intense labor took its toll. This time I just felt great, it was such a relief! I was so happy to finally be holding this overdue baby in my arms!

Baby Kicks Cloth Diaper Review & Giveaway

Cloth diapering a newborn for the first time is quite a journey. We started on cloth when baby T was 3 days old after a few non-chlorinated disposables the first hectic days. We went home nine hours after birth, so I wasn't ready for doing laundry right away. Today he is 10 days old and I'm finally getting the hang of it. We really loved trying all the various brands of diapers we have, including the BabyKicks 3g Pocket Diaper.

As you can see in the photo below, the diaper is a little large on a seven pound newborn, no surprise there. But it does fit great nevertheless, without any major gaps. Just give it another pound or two of baby fat and it will fit great. The side snaps, I have to admit, are not very convenient on a newborn, especially in the middle of the night. I do prefer snaps though for how long they last and I like the particular fit that side snaps provide for an infant and toddler.

I'm a big fan of the BabyKicks 3g gussets that allow for air flow. The cotton and bamboo liner is so incredibly soft, it is great against the baby's skin. I also like the front stuffing insert pocket, I don't have to touch the explosive newborn poop to get the insert out. I really appreciate the one-size design that will give us a ton of use with our BabyKicks 3g diaper.

Our BOY is finally here!

Natural Flu Prevention

There are a lot of natural remedies we rely on when we get sick, but of course the best thing during flu season is to take simple measures to prevent getting sick in the first place. Starting with proper nutrition that doesn't hinder your immune system, there are quite a few favorites around here. Among them are vitamin D, echinacea, honey, garlic, and lemon. Potty Training Tips

I had to idea what to expect from potty training my toddler. But now that it is in the final stages and nothing like what I expected it to be, I do know a thing or two - even if it is just about my toddler. Every child responds differently, wouldn't it be odd if they were all the same? I know my tips may not even apply for our second baby, but it was an interesting experience (and certainly frustrating at times). So I didn't give birth on 11/11/11. As much as the soon-to-be-big-sister (above) insisted and pleaded with my tummy. Looks like it will be a long weekend waiting for this little one to make his (or her) appearance. I remembered today though that I completely forgot to fill you in on another endeavor of mine - blogging for Thanks Mama cloth diaper store. I've had the fortunate opportunity to meet the owner, Helena, personally and have my toddler girl play with hers! She also has a little boy who is only a few months older than our soon-to-be-born baby. Her store is expanding and there are so many great cloth diapers and baby gear to choose from, I'm excited to be part of their small business.

Our posts over at Thanks Mama for the last two months should keep you reading while this baby of ours decides to come out, hopefully this weekend. Maybe my next post should be about natural labor induction techniques? Uhm, I should go Google that now.

Our new attic finally looks like an office and is perhaps the nicest room in the house. It's also the warmest! Which makes me want to stay here a while in the winter - not great considering the kitchen and all the food are two floors down and my toddler is an avid snacking machine. For some finishing touches we bought a white leather ottoman with a tray table at a local Home Goods and we received the Zuo Modern Eco Office Chair for review.

There is a lot to love here, aside from the fact that anything new is better than our old office chair that was falling apart and literally peeling. First, as an Interior Designer I certainly appreciate the modern aesthetic and ergonomic design. It's really sleek, minimalist without being skimpy. Looks and feels rather luxurious. It is not real leather, it's a man made material - hence I guess you can call it vegan (not that I am) and that's why it is the 'Eco' chair. Honestly, I prefer real leather, but I'm really liking this material. It feels and looks very close to the real thing, time will tell how it stands up to daily wear and tear.

Assembling the chair wasn't an easy task. There were no instructions in the box, thankfully my husband is pretty good at putting things together. I would have needed directions! The second problem we ran into is that it was impossible to keep the white leatherette clean through assembly because my husband had to touch the slightly oily metal parts and got his hands a little soiled. After assembly we were left to figure out how to clean it. The only thing that worked after a few attempts is old fashioned Russian laundry soap (yes, I brought it from overseas several years ago).

Once my husband sat in the chair and tried it out he forgot all about the inconvenient assembly quirks! He is very picky with office chairs, this one he loved and it fits him perfectly. He is 6'2" and 180 pounds. While it is still comfortable for me, it is on the large side for my 5'2" frame at 100 pounds. Well, being nine months pregnant there isn't anything that can be comfortable right now! It looks perfect in the space, it matches the white ottoman, and completes the look we were trying to achieve. A black office chair just wouldn't look right here. We really wanted everything light since there are no windows. Never mind that we have a toddler and another baby on the way! We'll just have to teach them to take good care of the furniture (and hide the scissors).

Certainly not cheap for a chair that is not real leather, but if you're looking for the right aesthetic, this just may be the ticket. They don't just sell office chairs. Scents from Nature: Seventh Generation

My favorite scent ever is that of wild strawberries. It makes me incredibly nostalgic just thinking of it since the scent brings me back to my childhood summers spent in the Ural mountains of Russia visiting my grandparents. We would walk through the forest near our vegetable garden and pick wild blueberries and strawberries. The taste and smell can't be compared to anything you can find at a store today. What would I do to be in that forest again and to hold a handful of aromatic real wild strawberries!

Another favorite? The smell of freshly cut grass - just not the type you mow with a lawnmower, mixed with the stench of gasoline. I'm talking about the real thing, the tall August grasses that my grandfather would cut with a sickle and then dry it and store as hay for the cow. I loved rolling around in it and helping make the haystacks. I was about six years old back then. I would love for my kids to experience something so simply beautiful and to smell that incredible scent.

Now to get you drooling, my current favorite scent, that I do not have to travel to a different country to experience, is the aroma of an apple pie when I get around to baking one. The face on my husband's face when he comes home to one is priceless. It's the best way to mask that 'old house' smell at our place and a perfect fall pick-me-up that reminds us of the start of winter and the coming of snowy evenings by our [fake] fireplace. The best part of course if that I have a toddler to help me make the biggest mess of the kitchen. No apple pie without that!

When it comes to cleaning products, the artificial scents most often make me want to gag. My biggest pet peeve are the scents in laundry detergent, I just can't be around people who wear clothing heavily scented with their detergent! After switching to naturally scented or unscented products myself, I can no longer tolerate anything artificial, especially when pregnant (like now, baby was due yesterday). I do enjoy light essential oil scents in my cleaning products, whether it is lavender, citrus, or tea tree - I don't mind smelling the natural scent, it's the artificial ones that I can't stand. I love the natural, light essential oil scents in Seventh Generation products.

Officially Due Today

That above is my attempt at taking a dramatic belly photo. That's as much as you'll see. Yes, I'm due today! According to the midwives. Another five days according to me. The last month has been a complete blur. My nesting instincts finally kicked in, but a little late because physically there is very little I have the strength or energy for. Finally, the mess from the attic renovation has just been completely overwhelming and my hormonal self just panics every day at the sight of the mess. I'm ready for the baby, that I am positively relaxed about. Giving birth seems to be the least of my worries right now! I'm actually really looking forward to it. I better be, since it is inevitable.

One thing I'm regretting with this pregnancy? That I didn't take the time to record it. I have a few prego photos, but certainly not the every week ones I took while pregnant with baby E, and no maternity photo shoot session. Who has time for that with a toddler on your hands? She's been extra outdoorsy lately (which I don't mind - I need the fresh air), extra clingy, extra hungry (can barely keep up with her appetite), extra overall demanding of my attention. Plus she's not the only one who wants my attention, I've got a backed up list of people who want to see me and want my time - which I don't have.

Things may be a little slow with posts on Eco-Babyz this month, bear with us as we adjust to life with a newborn and being a family of four! Thank you all for following our blog and being part of our journey!

Greener and Healthier School Lunches

I do not have kids in school, but I can only imagine how tough it can be do provide a healthy lunch for your kids every day and keep smiling while you're at it. Baby Brezza Baby Food Maker Review

I loved making my own baby food for baby E when she started solids. Sure it was a little extra work, but she ate a lot of what we ate - only in mashed form. I always wanted to try a one-step baby food maker to see how much time it would save. Of course there is nothing better than fresh for the baby, packaged baby food - even organic, isn't exactly fresh or the healthiest option. Only baby food made in your kitchen will have the biggest nutritional benefits - so important today when most produce is much lower in vitamins and nutrients than it was decades ago.

Baby Brezza isn't just great for infants, toddlers will love to skip the chewing part! My toddler is a really lousy chewer, she doesn't nearly chew her food thoroughly enough. To get the most nutrition into your toddler, it helps to have a little kitchen helper such as the Baby Brezza. It's easy enough for my toddler to use (with me present of course). I love that I can steam and blend, or blend only - some veggies are just better fresh rather than steamed. I can pick the consistency of the blend and make it a little chunkier for my toddler. It is perfect to have on the go, I just use some reusable containers.

When our next baby comes along (any minute now), I'm excited to have the Baby Brezza to save me time. With a toddler to take care of, you know there is no such thing as 'free time'. It's great to just be able to toss something in, press a button, and be done with it. That's the same reason why I love my bread maker so much! I am actually really liking the results myself, I don't think this is just for infants and toddlers - I'll eat baby E's blended veggies and fruits any day!

The Baby Brezza is really easy to wash and very low maintenance. There are only four dishwasher-safe parts, though I wash everything by hand. They carry a lot of really convenient containers to store the baby food you make, I received the Octo Storage System. It is perfect for little servings of baby food and it can be defrosted or reheated right in the Baby Brezza. Each little container even has a day of the week dial so you know when you made it. If you're looking more for something to use to blend your adult meals for an infant starting solids, you may want to try the Baby Brezza Quick Blend. I know many parents prefer to just start the baby on healthy food the family is eating on a daily basis anyway instead of making something separate.

The Greater Good: Must see movie for every parent!

Only until November 5th you can view The Greater Good movie online for free. If you are a parent, you simply must see this movie. Whether you are pro, anti, or undecided when it comes to vaccines - you owe it to your children to watch this movie and to take the time to research the subject thoroughly. Thinking of getting the Gardasil shot for your daughter? Watch this first. In fact, watch it before your children's next pediatrician appointment. There are only a few days left to watch it free anyway, so now is a good time.

This is more important than your menu plan for the week, your work, your holiday plans, the next 'big game', or any other excuse you can come up with. You can view the movie on Vimeo.

Please think hard and research all pros and cons before vaccinating your children with every vaccine in existence. You don't want to regret your decisions later.

I haven't finished watching the entire movie yet, but overall I think it is a well balanced, well researched account of the state of vaccinations today. I think parents have every reason to be doubtful of them and to ask questions. The science community better stop ignoring our questions and give us concrete answers, or at least stop treating parents like they aren't capable of seeing the obvious (in regards to vaccine injured children and side effects).

38 Weeks: What to Pack in a Birth Bag

Well, it's actually almost 39 weeks. Can't wait to meet this little human! I should have packed my bag a couple of weeks ago, I know. Now, I can't tell you what to pack in your birth bag because it's yours. Your needs may vary greatly from mine. Considering we're only going for a 12 hour post-birth stay and we're at a bring-your-own-food birth center - this bag will look a little different. I'm secretly wishing we could have had a home birth so I wouldn't have to pack anything at all!

For me and hubby:

My birth gown and water birth outfit
Underwear, postpartum pads, nursing pads, nursing bra
Toothbrush, toothpaste
Socks, slippers
Robe (more like a knit sweater duster)
Arnica 30x (great taken before and after birth for pain)
Native Remedies Easiotomy Cream, AfterBirth Drops, and Nipple Conditioning Cream (reviews to follow after birth)
Raspberry Leaf Tea bags
Oatmeal Raisin Cookies (I try to always have a batch on hand)
Sandwiches (our own bread with butter, cheese, chicken, pickles, lettuce)

Things are a little different this time too because I have to pack a little bag for my toddler who will be staying with grandma. My Bucket List!

It never crossed my mind to make a list of things I would love to do with my family or just for myself. My list could probably circle the earth a couple of times, but here are 15 random things I would love to do in the future in no particular order:

Homeschool my kids through high school! This is something I am most excited about and it is something we're actually doing, unlike most 'dreamy' things on this list.
Take an Alaska cruise with my husband (now I'm really dreaming, no way we would ever afford that!).
Learn to make sushi. Love sushi! Would love to make my own.
Start my own Interior Design business. I almost did a few months ago, but my pregnancy got in the way (not that I'm complaining) and I realized I can't be supermom and do everything at once. I would have to quit blogging at Eco-Babyz - that would be no fun!
Go on a family missions trip to work with orphans in Russia. I went when I was single and once with my husband, now we would love to go as a family. It would teach the kids some invaluable lessons on compassion that no textbook can do.
Go on a tropical family cruise. Someplace warm. In the middle of a New England winter. Nuf said.
Plant a vegetable garden.
Go on a family ski vacation in Canada when the kids are older. Mont Tremblant sounds good to me.
Travel Europe by rail with my husband (leave the kids with grandparents!) Can't believe I never traveled Europe when I actually lived there, bummer. Now it is a bit our of reach.
Get a worthy camera that makes photos that will not make me cringe. I'm an amateur pro, but the camera we have doesn't do my talents justice (or my adorable toddler for that matter).
Invest in a washer and dryer that doesn't ruin our clothes. Our washer and dryer belongs in the appliance graveyard. Cloth diapering full time I definitely need these soon. Just don't know who will pay for it! Sponsor me? ;)
Sign up for a local CSA. Always wanted to, but it will only happen if I can prove to my husband that it will save us money.
Build an Eco off-grid home with enough land to roam. Our dream with my husband. I love Blu Homes, local to me. Albeit out of our price range once again.
Keep a clean house for more than two weeks (just for laughs, maybe when the kids grow up). I think two weeks is the longest I've had what I consider a 'clean house'. That's when the photo was taken.
Open an online Eco-friendly baby store. Now is not a good time for it, but will it ever be? Always wanted to have my own online store that goes with the 'close to nature' philosophy of Eco-Babyz and links to the blog.

Tasting the durian fruit didn't make the list - that's because I just recently did that! My toddler loved it and I kind of did too :)

Eco Home: GreenPan Review

Some of my favorite things to make and eat for breakfast are crepes and pancakes. I've been almost completely avoiding making them though because we made the switch to stainless steel cookware for the health of our family (doesn't help that I'm pregnant and was seriously craving some). We previously used non-stick Teflon coated cookware, but after learning just how toxic it is, I wanted to avoid it altogether. I love my stainless pans, but guess what? They are impossible to use for high heat frying and yummy things such as pancakes. Unless you want to put a quarter cup coconut oil in it. I've been finally rescued by GreenPan - a perfect non-toxic non-stick cookware solution that will not poison my family! We received a 9.5" Copenhagen Open Fry Pan and I am completely smitten by the results, to put it mildly.

It has been just over a week since I received it and I already made pancakes, crepes, an omelette, and did some basic sauteing in it. What was I thinking before?! This pan is a dream come true, I can finally make delicious breakfasts without having to scrub a pan for an hour afterward and without having to scrape off a burnt on mess on my stainless pan. Everything just slides right off. Even without any oil. Great news for folks who are trying to loose weight and even better news for those who like flavorful food. What I love is that whatever oil I use when I choose too - it all ends up in the food, it doesn't stay on the pan. That's great for me because I'm trying to gain weight!

Of course the best thing about the pan besides the amazing non-stick properties is that it isn't toxic like most other non-stick cookware. There is just so much to love about GreenPan:

No PTFE (PolyTetraFluoroEthylene) coatings that decompose at high heat
No PFOA (PerFluoroOctanoic Acid) used in the making, known to be a 'likely human carcinogen'
Thermolon ceramic non-stick coating technology is completely non-toxic
No toxic fumes released even when heated to 850° F
Great heat conductor for perfect searing and crispy frying with little to no oil needed
So easy to clean, I'm in awe! No scrubbing!

Perfect strawberry topped pancakes! They took a lot less time to make and resulted in zero frustration. The omelette I made? Simply the best flavor ever. Even though I didn't have a cover that fit the pan, the one I used was loosely placed on top, it was ready in 5 minutes less than my usual omelettes. I had to call my husband and show him the jaw dropping slide-off-the-pan maneuver with a virtually spotless surface left.

Eco Home: Earthpaint Aqualine Floor Finish Review

As I've mentioned in my previous review, our attic is finally coming together. It better be ready for our little bundle, I'm so done carrying the extra weight of two large watermelons! We are DIY-selfers when it comes to this renovation, the idea was to spend as little as possible and still have a nice, non-toxic room. For the flooring we chose to buy some high grade plywood, finish it with a non-toxic finish, and place a natural wool rug over it for the kids to play on. To complete the equation, Earthpaint has generously sent us a gallon of their Aqualine Satin Wood Finish for review. This low odor floor finish is very affordable and safe, plus it is so easy to use, anyone can do it!

My husband completed the entire application of two coats (one stain and one clear) in one evening. The next morning there was virtually no smell. While it was being applied there was a slight odor, it was mildly annoying for the due-any-minute me. We have no windows there so the only ventilation is the portable HVAC unit. Nevertheless, I would take this any day over a conventional stinky floor finish from a big box store!

We chose the Light Cedar stain color which comes in a separate syringe and you just mix it with the clear Aqualine Satin liquid. The hardest part was just keeping up with how fast it dries, hubby definitely broke a sweat as he was doing it! It may have acted a little different on solid hardwood, but the plywood was like a thirsty sponge. It wasn't the ideal material, but within our budget. If it looks so great on our plywood above, I can imagine how awesome it would look on real hardwood! More photos coming soon of the finished attic, patience.

The Aqualine Satin Floor Finish is priced at $55.97 a gallon and covers about 600 square feet (about half that for a rough finish like our plywood). If you prefer a semi-gloss finish, their NanoTech Wood and Concrete Sealer is something to consider, it is pricier at $93.15 a gallon and covers 600 to 800 square feet on hardwood (350-550 on soft wood). That's not all Earthpaint has to offer, they carry great deck stain, non-toxic paint, wood finishes, and wood cleaners.

Earthpaint is a sustainable, U.S. based company and all of their products are made locally in Asheville, NC from local materials within a days drive of their location. The company was started by Tom Rioux, a professional painter of 25 years, who was poisoned by the paints and wood finish that he was told is safe. Earthpaint is committed to creating the highest quality healthy finishes on the market. Kudos to such a great business for providing alternatives to petro-poisons!

Eco Home: YOLO Colorhouse Paint Review & Renovation Photo!

Could this be true? I must be dreaming! Is our attic renovation really coming together? Slooowwlllllyyy... This project was supposed to be done back in July! Our baby is due in a couple short weeks, I am so relieved to see the light at the end of the tunnel (really hoping that's not a train). I'm really thankful to have the support of some awesome companies in completing this project as it has almost put us over the edge financially. I remember first discovering YOLO Colorhouse zero VOC paint when attending Greenbuild in Boston in 2008 as an Interior Design professional. I was smitten by their earthy palettes of no-stink paint. Over the years their name stuck in my head.

Fast forward to 2011, we're excited to finally have tried their indie non-toxic paint in our own home. We were sent two gallons of the Grain .03 interior paint for our attic. We use zero VOC paint throughout our house because of concerns for indoor air pollution. Plus, I always loathed the smell of paint - especially when pregnant. This was even more important in our attic that has no windows! Very soon it will be occupied by our rambunctious baby E and the surprise-gender newborn, I don't want them breathing any nasty asthma and cancer causing stuff.

On to the good stuff... My husband painted the entire attic with the YOLO paint and absolutely loved it. He noted it has great coverage, it isn't drippy, it's very easy to work with. Here is a glimpse of the ready-to-be-accessorized attic (sorry, not nearly a good quality photo with my cheap camera):

There is so much to tell about YOLO Colorhouse paint and the company, I can't possibly cover it all. First, I love that they are small - but very professional. I absolutely love their palette because frankly I don't want 1,500 colors to choose from and give me a headache. With three palettes and a total of 92 intentional colors that work beautifully together - you have a much easier time picking exactly what you need (and what will not land you on the Worst in Interior Design page of Architectural Digest). The best part, the paint contains NO carcinogens, reproductive toxins, mutagens, hazardous air pollutants, ozone depleting compounds, formaldehyde, phthalates, VOCs, and no BAD COLORS! So regular paint has all these things? You bet! At about $36 a gallon, you certainly get what you pay for - and this is a very reasonable, competitive price for zero VOC paint.

Over-the-Counter Drugs Double Risk of Miscarriage?

It seems like every day I see a new headline about the dangers to the unborn that surround us. It's especially glaring when you're the one who is pregnant. I recently wrote about diet soda being a possible miscarriage culprit. Now I'm writing about a more obvious danger, over-the-counter drugs.

It's easy to assume that if it is sold freely in stores, it must be safe. Unfortunately that is far from the truth. Millions of Americans take non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This includes Aleve, Advil, Celebrex, and Diclofenac to name a few. A new study concluded that "Gestational exposure to any type or dosage of nonaspirin NSAIDs may increase the risk of spontaneous abortion. These drugs should be used with caution during pregnancy." This isn't the first time this kind of miscarriage link has been found either. Another 2003 study also found that NSAIDs or aspirin taken during pregnancy increased risk of miscarriage by 80%.

We need to remember that pregnant women are not included in safety testing for all drugs before they are put on the market because of possible risks to the unborn baby. It is safest to assume that all drugs are not safe for you and baby, especially considering that the long lists of side effects actually affect normal, healthy adults. It's also important to note that another class of prescription drugs are very dangerous. Statins are guaranteed to cause birth defects or miscarriage as they are a Class X drug. Millions of Americans take these to lower cholesterol levels. With all this in mind, is it any wonder why 10 to 25 percent of pregnancies end up in miscarriage? The United States is the most drugged nation in the entire world.

I'm glad we do not use any drugs in our household, we don't even keep them in the house. But I know many women who do and I hope you take this message into consideration to weigh the pros and cons of drugs and their effects on a fetus.

Eco Home: Count It All Joy Moses Basket Review & Sweepstakes

With our attic renovation coming to a close, we will officially be living in a three level home soon. That's a lot of stairs for me and the little ones! To save myself some sanity, we'll have baby gates everywhere and each level has to have some baby essentials so I don't have to constantly run up and down the stairs. Our sleeping quarters are on the second floor and the office (where I will spend much time working while babies are playing/napping) is on the third floor. I really wanted to have a portable bed that would be good to keep in the office space while the baby is little. I am not a fan of multi-level living, but we have to make do with what we have right now. I can already see how dinner cooking on the first floor and me working on the third will not mesh well (smells like something is burning?). In this situation a Moses basket is perfect for those first few months when the baby naps frequently and it helps to have him/her by your side. It is a short term item for sure, but after the baby grows out of it, it's a great place for stuffed toys and dolls. My toddler has already been eyeing it as a bed for her dolls!

We don't know the gender of our baby, but I think even the Blue/Chocolate is quite gender neutral and it is my favorite color after all. Baby E loves building things out of blocks, it's a really helpful parenting tool for me since we do not have television and she keeps herself occupied with these educational, open-ended toys. In a few short weeks our newborn will be joining us, boy will I need things to keep her occupied! We received some CitiBlocs to review and baby E was really excited to play and build with them to her heart's content. Wooden blocks are a rather classic toy, but the shape of these enables you to make very unique structures. They balance very well with the precisely cut long rectangular shape. My toddler still likes breaking more than building, especially if I'm present. So I've been making quite a few fun towers while she topples them over. Another favorite way to play is to line them all up like dominoes and see the chain reaction as they topple over. I think it is even more fun for older children who are better at balancing the blocks and thinking up their own designs, but they're great even for a three year old. It's never too early to develop their creative side!

Zarbee's Nighttime Cough and Sleep Drink Review & Rafflecopter Giveaway

With the temperatures plummeting and New England fall finally settling in, I'm stashing our medicine cabinet of natural remedies. Since we stay away from drugs of any kind here, I have found a lot of highly effective products in the past few years. Hopefully we will not be getting sick anytime soon, but if baby E catches a cough we'll be trying the new Zarbee's Nighttime Cough & Sleep Drink. There are a lot of things we love about this. First, of course are the superb ingredients of buckwheat honey powder, vitamin C, elderberry extract, and zinc. These are things that I would usually give to my child separately, but it is so much easier to have it combined in one dose of a naturally flavored remedy. It is also properly named as a nighttime sleep drink because it contains melatonin and should help your child [or you] fall asleep. There are no dyes, preservatives, alcohol, or drugs. One package retails for $8.99 and contains 6 packets. Each packet is to be dissolved in two ounces of warm water and taken once a day, so essentially it is a one week supply. Oh, and in case you need some science to back it up, clinical studies have shown buckwheat honey to be more effective at relieving coughs associated with colds and upper respiratory illnesses than Dextromethorphan (DM) or diphenhydramine, the two most common ingredients in over-the-counter cough medicine (those can no longer be used under the age of 4 anyway).

Zarbee's also makes a cough syrup that is safe to use for 12+ months. It comes in cherry, grape, and lemon flavors. Zarbee's products are available online at Amazon and Drugstore.com or you can also find them at a pharmacy near you.

Son of Gustav Kids Slippers Review

Our toddler went through a growth spurt this summer, don't they all? Now everything seems to be too small on her, the pants are too short, the shoes are crowding the toes. Her slippers were getting so small, we needed some new ones pronto since our home is on a slab and the New England fall is getting chilly (not to mention our heat doesn't work). We received some adorable Swedish Moccasins from Son of Gustav for review. We picked the gender neutral Grey Circulations pattern (good for hiding all the dirt she gets into). Good quality slippers aren't easy to find, most stores only carry polyester ones that do not let the foot breathe. I don't like my toddler running around with sweaty feet in the winter, easy to get sick that way.

These little kids slippers are absolutely adorable, not to mention comfortable. I wouldn't mind wearing a pair. My toddler is accident prone (they all are, right?) and I'm happy to report she hasn't slipped once in these after a week of wearing them. They are easy on and off, though my almost 3 year old has trouble with it (as she does with socks). But at least they are easy for me to put on her! What I love is that once they are on, they stay on. The sole is non-slip leather in a light gray color, the sock is 80% cotton, 15% Lycra, and 5% polyamide. It's super stretchy, so it is comfortable on any type of foot - chubby or skinny. I did get a size too big, but it is so subtle and fits so well that she doesn't trip over them, lots of room to grow into without being unsafe. The sizes available start at 6 months and go up to 4T. The baby shoes come in the following patterns on the sock part:

Not all Swedish footwear you can find is actually made in Sweden, but these are! As authentic as they come. They are hand sewn and machine washable. Though I probably would just wash them by hand because my old washing machine tends to ruin things. These slippers are priced at $27 each and I [secretly] wish they came in my size too! Oh, I also loved the packaging they came in - a neat little sturdy cardboard container that baby E now stores her trains in.

I'm looking forward to nursing again, I miss it. With baby E turning three in a couple of months, I really can't wait to hold a tiny, helpless newborn that depends on mommy for everything. How are these different from the average reusable nursing pad? They will not leak, they are ultra thin and do not show under clothing, and they are made with organic bamboo fabric. Beyond organic, the fabric is certified free of harmful substances by Oeko-tex Standard 100. Soft doesn't even quite describe these nursing pads! They are so luxuriously plush, one mom put it well saying "Like a cashmere sweater for my boobies!" Behind the bamboo layer is a hidden layer of super absorbent hemp to contain the biggest of leaks. The outer layer is polyester with urethane coating, similar to waterproof cloth diapers.

Not only do Bamboobies feel absolutely incredible and are superior to disposables, they'll save you a ton of money! A nine month supply of disposable nursing pads will cost about $360, whereas the Bamboobies Multi-pack of four pairs (3 regular, one overnight) will only cost you $29. I nursed my first for two years, I would have spent a fortune on disposables! I think the math is pretty easy! Just like with cloth diapers. A no-brainer. Even if you buy two Multi-packs so you do not have to wash them as much, that's $58 - not $360. The argument for water and detergent cost doesn't apply here (as it does with cloth diapers) because obviously you wouldn't run a separate wash just for these, they just go in with your regular laundry. :)

With baby E it seemed like she was teething forever, from about four months old until she was over twenty months. That's a long time! I wish I had some teething jewelry for her to gnaw on back then. Not only is it a great distraction at checkout, while you're on the phone, or trying to cook with the baby in a carrier - it's safer than having the baby play with your jewelry. We were sent the gorgeous Deep Sea Blue Jane Necklace and the Turquoise Cornelia Bracelet for review. I love the chunky beads and I can imagine how much a teething baby will love them! The necklace is great for wearing while nursing to keep the baby focused and the bracelet can serve as a reminder for which side you last nursed on. The necklaces have a breakaway clasp for safety. It is very easy to clean with soap and water and the silicone rubber is a very stable material that will not deteriorate, tear, or support the growth of fungus, mold, or bacteria. It is tested by an independent testing lab and contains no BPA, PVC, phthlates, cadmium, or lead. This necklace pictured below is priced at $29.50 and the bracelet is $11.50.

The only two things I didn't like about this set is the fact it is made in China and that it had the new silicone smell when it arrived. Products that have an unpleasant smell are a pet peeve of mine. The smell is almost gone though. Still, this isn't the cheap China made necklace you may have in your jewelry box that likely contains lead, cadmium, and heavy metals. This is made to very different and high standards. This is not a toy, it is adult jewelry - but I definitely feel safer letting my toddler use these for dress up play rather than any of the unsafe necklaces I have (several of which she has already broken under my supervision!).

I keep saying we have less toys than the average American child. It's still true. But the scary thing is even while having less than most, I'm having a hard time containing them! Swoop Bags are perfect for containing the little things that get played with often. The bag opens completely to create a play mat, when you're done playing you just 'swoop' up the toys by pulling the string. It neatly contains all the contents without anything falling out. We've been using the Swoop for baby E's blocks and train tracks and it's been extremely useful. She can make a complete mess and then clean up only takes a few seconds. Perfect when she plays in the living room and there are surprise guests coming!

The Swoop toy bag is made of highly durable cotton canvas. How durable? Well, my husband was checking and put our 26 pound toddler in it. Passed with flying colors! I'm convinced it can hold a lot more than that too. It comes in six colors, we love the Aquarium we received. It is very generously sized at 44" diameter. you can machine wash it in cold water, awesome! Another bonus, it's made in the USA!

Eco Home: Organize World Bamboo Letter Organizers Review

Being eight months pregnant and not knowing when a major renovation will end is a little stressful to say the least. Apparently I'm a little insane, so I decided it would be great to share a few great stores and brands with you for an Eco Home Event. Today we want to introduce you to Organize World, an online store that can take care of all your storage and organization needs. Not every item sold there is Eco friendly, but there are some options. Finding Eco friendly organizers and storage solutions is near impossible anyway, so you just have to pick the lesser of all evils or drop the Eco card altogether to get something you need to stay organized for your family's sanity.

I am not a very organized person. This gets in the way of life often, but I've been learning along the way and one thing I know - everything has to have its own place! Organize World sent us the Bamboo Space Saving Organizer, 2 Section Bamboo Letter and Bill Organizer, and the York Lyra Key Rack. These three items are a step in the right direction to keep our new attic office from becoming a mess. I like my desk clear of clutter - but it's so hard to keep at it! Especially when you aren't the only person using it.

We love the bamboo material of the letter and paper organizers and the natural look. Bamboo is not exactly the most Eco friendly in the way it is processed, but it is a natural, rapidly renewable resource. Simple design and very functional for storing letters (hopefully you're mostly paperless anyway), post-its, pens/pencils, rubber bands, and paper clips. As a work-at-home-mom it is little things like this that can keep my sanity so I don't have to look for something that doesn't have its own place while my toddler is climbing on my office chair and tugging at my arms (yes, right now, as I'm typing!). The key organizer is so important to have, when was the last time you looked for your keys? It happens often around here! We have one car, and the one who drove last gets blamed for misplacing the keys. The little key rack will help avoid that scenario.

Organize World has anything you can possibly need to keep your family organized, you'll find everything from kitchen organizers, closet organizers, office organizers, craft organizers, travel organizers, to garage organizers and bath storage. The big question is which room to start with!

I love finding fun and imaginative kids clothing from small companies that really stand out. Even better if the clothing is made of sustainable, organic materials. Nohi Kids is one such company that makes adorable organic children's clothing. Their pieces are so unique and have tons of personality - certainly suits baby E! We received a pair of leggings and a long sleeve shirt for review. Of course I insist on matching her blue eyes with the teal guitar and leggings.

Baby E is highly musically inclined. She makes instruments out of anything she can get her hands on, she loves to sing, and not a day goes by in this house without music turned on. Hence of course she loves the guitar motif on her new shirt ($28.50). The organic cotton leggings go well with many outfits and are priced at $22.50. We received the size 3, but I definitely thought it is on the small side for fit. She still wears 2T clothing, but these were almost small on her. The size 3 organic shirt was sized perfectly being a little bit large for her as I expected.

All the Nohi Kids clothing is made of a blend of 50% organic cotton, 48% bamboo, and 2% lycra. This makes for a very soft and cozy fabric. All the graphics are printed with low-impact water-based ink. In addition to what we've reviewed they also carry adorable organic girls dresses, skirts, and organic baby clothing. Nohi Kids regularly contributes a percentage of profits to the health and well-being of children.

Preterm Labor and Diet Soda

Diet soda junkie? Pregnant? You may want to look into why that's a really bad combination. I'm not even going to go into why soda in general isn't good for you. But when it comes to artificial sweeteners in diet soda, the unborn have a lot to tell us. Such a high increase (as much as 78%) in premature deliveries can hardly be called a coincidence. EcoGear Toddler Backpack Review

My toddler has had an obsession with backpacks since the first time she saw one. You know how they like to collect all their favorite things and stuff them in a box or bag? She does this every day for every toy category, or mixes it all together. She doesn't beg for things, thankfully, but she's been politely asking for a backpack for a while. So we're really excited to finally have one thanks to ecogear. Oh, did I mention she loves monkeys and has a little monkey obsession too? That's why this was the perfect bag for her. Two monkeys in this photo, the bigger blue eyed one is my favorite!

Finding a toddler backpack wasn't easy, believe me. There were many, but they were either out of our price range, with cartoon characters all over, or made with toxic vinyl. Our tastes may be hard to please, but we weren't asking for much. We love the Monkey backpack and how simple it is, plus it is just the right size. Made of cotton canvas and dyed with non-toxic dyes. The straps are highly adjustable and right now we have them on almost the smallest setting. It would easily fit an adult too, if you have a thing for monkeys. The backpack has a drawstring tie, just one compartment, and a flap - which is the monkey's face that secures with a wooden toggle. The one thing I would change is adding another compartment inside or some pockets for the little things. My toddler also has some trouble with the toggle closure which is challenging for her little fingers to open and close - but that's actually a good thing, she's learning something new! Though a little magnetic closure would be a lot easier, even if not as visually appealing. Priced at $36 it is also one of the more affordable backpacks of this quality that we've seen. There are four animals to choose from in the Ecozoo series: monkey, panda, pig, and puppy. Others we would like to see? Maybe a duck, frog, tiger, and a cat.

Ecogear also carries a great line of kids backpacks, adult backpacks, laptop bags, travel bags, and even a PVC free sleeping bag. All the products are Eco friendly in some way. If you have older kids, the messenger bags and backpacks are super adorable and I'm sure teenagers would love the line of modern adult backpacks. I'm a big fan of the Ocean Backpack made from recycled PET bottles, I love the sleek design and that it's priced at under $30.

Sprout Change Wool Diaper Review & Rafflecopter Giveaway

Since we're big fans of wool, I always love trying new wool products and cloth diapers. Recently we discovered the Sprout Change diapering system and I was surprised to find that their one-size shell also comes in a wool option. We received their wool shell and an organic fleece hemp prefold to try with our newborn due to arrive in a month.

What is so different about Sprout Change diapers? It features an innovative one-size system that fits 5 to 40 pounds. I was surprised as how easy it is to adjust when it arrived. You pull just one elastic on each side and it automatically adjusts both the rise and the waist. So instead of four places to make an adjustment, there is just two. The elastics are secured with buttons, much like the adjustable waists on kids pants. The Sprout Change one-size diaper is reversible and the shell is reusable, you get two colors in one and more use out of it. It has gussets to prevent leaks and the diaper is very breathable, the wool shell even more so.

For the absorbent diaper layer inside the shell you have many options. You can use the Sprout Change Super Saver Inserts which sell for $4.75 for the stay dry or $5.75 for organic. We chose the Organic Hemp Prefold pictured above, it comes in two sizes (size 1 for $6.25 and size 2 for $7.95). It is incredibly soft! Paired with the wool shell it is a very absorbent, highly breathable, and completely natural diapering option.

The Sprout Change shells are priced at $16.95 each. Since they can be reused if the diaper isn't soiled, you don't need that many. You could stock up on your choice of prefolds or microfiber inserts, pair them with the shells, and you have a convenient system that fits from birth to potty training.

PS: Sprout Change also has some awesome, custom fit training pants which work in a similar way to the diaper shells!

Obermeyer ECOlicious Snowsuit Review

Baby E absolutely loves the outdoors, she would live outside if she had her way. For New England winters it is essential for her to have the right gear to be outside even on cold days. We're really thankful to Obermeyer for providing our toddler with a weatherproof outfit that will serve her for more than one season! We received the Karma jacket and Snoverall for review. The color was a surprise to us, and though we're fans of blue - we love this combination of Limeade and Creamsicle.

We took photos just for fun since the set is size 4 and it is something she has to grow into! She's a peanut and though she is almost 3 years old she still wears 2T clothing. She may wear it at the end of this season if she has a growth spurt, but next winter it will be perfect, and even the winter after that since it features the I-Grow Extended Wear System. The shell is made of 53% polyester from recycled PET bottles, hence the ECOlicious material name. I'm not a fan of polyester or synthetic materials, but obviously it is great for this purpose. I don't think I would have baby E clad in a sheepskin snowsuit to play in the snow - that would be pretty heavy! This suit is super light and easy to move in. She even likes wearing it around the house.

We absolutely love all the gear from Obermeyer. The modern and fun kids snowsuits designs are great for kids of all ages and the gear is made for high performance in the snow and on the slopes. They have gear for babies, toddlers, children, and teens. I really love their baby buntings sized 6 months to 18 months. The prices are not the cheapest, but you do get very high quality outerwear that more than one kid can wear. The Karma jacket retails for $129.50 and the Snoverall is $79.50. Every kids snow suit you buy can be worn for at least two seasons and if your family likes to ski and is outdoors a lot in the winter, this may be worth the investment. It will keep your kids warm and dry, not to mention looking adorable!

Obermeyer definitely knows what they are doing when it comes to ski outerwear design, after all they are based in Aspen, Colorado.
